Wolverine is not in the MCU's X-Men movie

As a gamer who grew up watching and loving the X-Men, this news has me both excited and a little confused. On one hand, I’m thrilled to see the mutants finally joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially with the promising lineup hinted at. However, the absence of Wolverine in the initial reboot leaves me scratching my head a bit.

The iconic X-Men superhero team will eventually join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, thanks to the Multiverse Saga paving the way. The foundation has already been laid, so it’s just a question of when we’ll see them in action. At present, an X-Men film is being produced by Marvel Studios, serving as the culmination of various hints and allusions to Marvel’s Mightiest Mutants that have been scattered throughout recent years.

The storyline initiated by a discreet reference to the mutant gene in Ms. Marvel, ultimately leading to the official announcement of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first mutant and the reappearance of X-Men actors Patrick Stewart and Kelsey Grammer as their characters Professor X and Beast. This led up to the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in Deadpool and Wolverine, with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige verifying that the Mutants Era has commenced.

However, a new report has since revealed that the MCU’s upcoming X-Men reboot may not feature one particular legendary member of the X-Men. But there is a good reason for that.

Wolverine reportedly won’t appear in the MCU’s X-Men reboot

As a diehard fan, I’ve picked up some intriguing tidbits from industry insider Daniel Richtman. It seems the upcoming MCU X-Men movie won’t include Wolverine in any way, shape, or form. However, the rest of the team looks set to be quite familiar. Mostly, it appears we’ll see the same lineup as in the animated series on Disney Plus, X-Men ’97, but alas, Logan will not be among them.

It’s possible that Wolverine won’t appear in the upcoming film, and this could actually be exciting news for fans of the current Wolverine. According to Daniel Richtman, Hugh Jackman plans to continue portraying his version of the character, which may even extend beyond Avengers: Secret Wars, marking the end of the Multiverse Saga.

Wolverine is not in the MCU's X-Men movie

This new development strongly suggests that Jackman might indeed be staying with the role, lending credence to earlier speculations. It appears that Logan, the character played by Jackman, may have more appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the future. After retiring from the role in 2017’s film “Logan,” it was thought that his appearance in “Deadpool and Wolverine” would be a one-time event, but recent indications point to his character having a continued presence in the MCU franchise.

It’s tough to challenge that assessment since his portrayal is regarded as one of the greatest, making it difficult to envision another actor taking on that role. Given that the character we know from Deadpool and Wolverine already had his own X-Men team in their universe, it seems logical that he wouldn’t be immediately teamed up with a new group of X-Men – even if they are the future official team of the MCU.

This implies that the remaining X-Men characters might be played by different actors in the future, replacing those from both the original trilogy and the prequels. Fans had been speculating this possibility, but this seems to confirm it. If it were a reboot featuring the same cast, there would be no explanation for why Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine wouldn’t join them on screen again.

It appears that this film might focus on a new beginning for the X-Men team, with many old favorites like Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Storm, Gambit, and Rogue making an appearance under Charles Xavier’s leadership. However, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Wolverine won’t eventually align himself with the X-Men; given his independent nature and past experiences with his own team, it might take some time for him to join up, though.

It’s possible that we might witness Hugh Jackman rejoin some of his original X-Men co-stars, given the speculation about their return for brief appearances in Avengers: Secret Wars, which could serve as a fitting conclusion to the Multiverse Saga. However, it’s important to note that a collaboration with the MCU’s newer X-Men crew is unlikely to occur any time soon. The hoped-for reunion between Jackman and his team didn’t materialize in Deadpool and Wolverine, unfortunately.
