Without Star Trek: Discovery, there would be no Star Trek: Strange New Worlds now
As a lifelong Star Trek enthusiast who has navigated through the cosmos of fanaticism since the original series first graced our screens, I can confidently say that Star Trek: Discovery has proven to be a divisive yet crucial link in the ongoing saga of exploration and camaraderie. While some may find it too dark or unconventional, its undeniable impact on the Star Trek universe cannot be understated – particularly with regards to the birth of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Despite wrapping up this year, Star Trek: Discovery continues to stir up heated debates among Star Trek enthusiasts, with discussions likely persisting for years. While some found it excessively dark, others felt it was over-reaching in its attempts to embody Trek’s essence. There are numerous criticisms of the show, but there’s one undeniable reason why Discovery deserves recognition: It paved the way for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to emerge.
Captain Pike [Anson Mount] was introduced in the second season of Discovery as the interim captain and with him came the mystery of Spock’s [Ethan Peck] supposed killing of several people while inside a medical facility. When Spock was finally brought aboard Discovery, the chemistry between him and Captain Pike was umistakeable. Even the brief interaction we saw with Pike and his Number One [Rebecca Romijn] clearly showed a connection that would prove to be continued in Strange New Worlds. Add in the Enterprise, and you have the makings for a brand new series that would follow Captain Pike and his crew as they “go where noone has gone before.”
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but marvel at how Strange New Worlds came to life, thanks largely to the original Discovery series. Sure, we might have stumbled upon a similar universe someday, but it wouldn’t have been populated by these exceptional actors who breathe life into Pike and Spock. This unique blend of talent is part of what makes Strange New Worlds such a captivating success. It was the passionate Discovery fans who first called for a spin-off, sensing the potential in Pike’s command and Spock’s unwavering loyalty to Starfleet and his team.
Some Star Trek enthusiasts were displeased with the relationship established between Captain Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Spock, particularly the adoption connection, as it was met with criticism that it deviated from established canon. Nevertheless, it’s undeniable that Strange New Worlds has been warmly received by fans. If Captain Pike hadn’t joined Discovery, we might not have the Enterprise crew we see today in Strange New Worlds.
