With ‘Inside Out 2,’ Disney’s Pixar looks to get its blockbuster mojo back

As a long-time cinema devotee and someone who has witnessed Pixar’s meteoric rise to animation greatness, I have to say that the recent downturn in the studio’s fortunes is disheartening. For years, Pixar was the standard-bearer of excellence in animated filmmaking, consistently delivering critically acclaimed and financially successful movies. But the COVID-19 pandemic and a series of missteps have left the once-unstoppable studio reeling.

For decades, it seemed that Pixar couldn’t lose.

Since 1995, I’ve been a dedicated fan of Pixar Animation Studios based in Emeryville, California. They’ve consistently wowed critics and audiences alike with one blockbuster hit after another, starting with “Toy Story.”

After the COVID-19 pandemic hit us all, even the usually unshakeable Pixar found itself facing the same challenges afflicting the entire entertainment industry, along with some missteps of our own.

As a movie buff, I’ve noticed that films like “Lightyear” didn’t perform well financially at the box office. Several factors contributed to this disappointing outcome. The timing of their release during the pandemic was less than ideal, and some viewers felt that the quality of these movies had taken a dip – something that Pixar, long renowned for its excellence, hadn’t been associated with before.

With the long-awaited release of “Inside Out 2,” Pixar aims to regain their success following the acclaimed 2015 film.

As a longtime film enthusiast and industry analyst, I’m thrilled to share my perspective on the upcoming release of “Inside Out 2.” Based on current projections and my own research, I believe this animated masterpiece is set to make a significant impact at the box office.

“According to Ron Bernard, academic chair of animation and motion design at Otis College of Art and Design, Pixar has been pioneering this art form,” or “Ron Bernard, academic chair of animation and motion design at Otis College of Art and Design, noted that Pixar has been a trailblazer in the creation of animated films. He is hopeful that ‘Inside Out 2’ will rekindle enthusiasm for Pixar productions.”

As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that in “Inside Out 2,” I get to rejoin Riley, now a teenage version of the character we all grew up with. This time around, she’s navigating the complex world of adolescence and dealing with a whole new set of emotions: Embarrassment, Anxiety, and Envy. Her trusted inner friends – Joy, Sadness, and Anger – are still by her side, lending their unique perspectives as they help Riley navigate this exciting yet challenging phase of life.

It’s surprising how high the predicted numbers are, especially given that numerous films this year have underperformed during their opening weekends. This is true for George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and the action-comedy “The Fall Guy,” starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. A successful opening weekend would not only boost Pixar but also provide a much-needed lift to struggling cinemas, which have experienced a 26% decrease in box office revenue compared to 2023.

The early sales figures for “Inside Out 2” on Fandango are impressive. Before its release, this animated film had already surpassed the advance ticket sales of its predecessor five days prior, making it the top-selling Pixar movie on Fandago since “Toy Story 4” in 2019 during the same stage of ticket sales.

“Jerramy Hainline, Fandango’s executive vice president, expressed great excitement as he looked forward to revisiting the cherished universe of ‘Inside Out’.”

As a movie critic, I’ve noticed that this year’s box office numbers have been underwhelming. The reasons for this include the ongoing struggle for theater attendance to fully recover, production delays caused by last year’s labor strikes, and a few high-profile films that didn’t perform as well as expected. Even Pixar, the beloved animation studio known for producing box office hits, hasn’t been able to escape these larger industry challenges.

Unfortunately for Pixar’s “Onward,” its release in theaters on March 6, 2020, coincided with the beginning of the pandemic-induced cinema closures across the country. Consequently, the film earned a disappointing global box office revenue of only $141 million and received critique that was less favorable than typical for Pixar productions.

During the initial stages of the pandemic, film studios shifted many theatrical productions to streaming platforms. This change lessened the cultural impact of newly released Pixar movies.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that “Soul,” released exclusively on Disney+ in December 2020, managed to make a significant impact despite being bypassed from traditional theaters in certain countries. Surprisingly enough, it bagged Oscars for the Best Animated Feature and Original Score. Similarly, “Turning Red,” which came out in 2022, skipped theaters initially and went straight to Disney+ – even though cinemas had reopened by then – but still garnered recognition with various accolades.

Displeased exhibitors and movie enthusiasts complained that Disney was encouraging audiences, especially families, to watch new films at home instead of driving to cinemas.

“According to David A. Gross from FranchiseRe, a movie newsletter in the film industry, if a movie succeeds in theaters, there’s nothing that can surpass it. The theatrical release serves as the powerful engine leading the way.”

The studio encountered some creative setbacks last year. “Lightyear,” which premiered in 2022, failed to take off after Pixar recast Tim Allen’s role as Buzz Lightyear with Chris Evans. On the other hand, “Elemental” experienced a sluggish beginning but managed to rake in approximately $496 million globally. Critics gave it generally positive, if not exceptionally glowing, reviews.

According to industry insiders, the pressure from Disney to generate more content for their streaming platform took a toll on Pixar’s production quality. With an increased workload, creatives at Disney, Pixar, Lucasfilm, and Marvel found themselves stretched thin, resulting in potential compromises in the artistic process.

Disney’s purchase of Pixar for $7.4 billion in 2006 is often seen as the turning point for Disney’s animation division. With Pixar films routinely earning over $750 million at the global box office, “Elemental” pales in comparison to past successes.

As a passionate film lover and an admirer of Pixar’s work, I have to say that there’s nothing amiss with their latest production. Instead, it’s a testament to Pixar’s exceptional ability to deliver high-quality animations that set the bar for the industry and themselves.

As a huge fan of Pixar’s movies, I can’t help but be impressed by their box office successes. The original “Inside Out” brought in an incredible $858 million globally, with an impressive $90 million opening in North America. But that was nothing compared to the mind-blowing $1.24 billion earnings of “Incredibles 2” in 2018. Wow! These numbers speak volumes about Pixar’s storytelling prowess and their ability to connect with audiences around the world.

Families had been hesitant to go back to cinemas last year due to health worries and the convenience of watching films at home. However, this trend is starting to change. For instance, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” from Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment generated a remarkable $1.4 billion in global box office revenue in 2022.

Anticipation is high among moviegoers for a series of animated films set to be released at the end of this year. These include “Despicable Me 4,” “Moana 2,” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.”

Pixar faces a significant challenge with the upcoming “Inside Out 2.” According to Gross, the real test will be if the studio can once again create that special magic with a fresh, non-sequel or spinoff story instead. Their next attempt at accomplishing this is scheduled for June 2025 when they plan to unveil “Elio,” an original film about a young boy’s interstellar journey.
