With a small update, Valve has reignited the Immortal Draft debate in Dota 2
In simpler terms, a significant overhaul has been implemented in Dota 2 for the Immortal Draft mode, which some gamers have expressed disapproval towards ever since it was first introduced.
In the 7.33 patch, the game mode known as Immortal Draft was introduced to Dota 2 with the New Frontiers update. Ever since then, many players have voiced their displeasure, claiming that it negatively impacts the game. Despite this, Valve has gradually raised the Matchmaking Rating (MMR) threshold, making it mandatory for Immortal-level players to participate in this mode. Now, another update has emerged, tweaking MMR limits once more and sparking renewed discussions about Immortal Draft.
Immortal Draft remains unpopular amongst Dota 2 players
As a dedicated fan, it’s clear that Immortal Draft initially appears to be an innovative concept for Dota 2, particularly beneficial for high MMR players like myself, as it encourages strategic decision-making and reduces in-game disagreements over roles. However, upon closer inspection, it’s got some significant issues. The community has voiced these concerns extensively, and with the latest update, a few more have surfaced.
- Win trading
As a gamer immersed in the world of Dota 2, I’d say even seasoned players with high MMR find it rewarding to team up with friends. Just like any other game, having a familiar face in a ranked match can make all the difference at times. Unfortunately, Immortal Draft had a tendency to separate duos, which was one of the main criticisms. This is because win trading was quite common in this mode, leading to players being split up unintentionally.
This implies that players can exploit their double down option against an ally they have queued with, who subsequently sabotages the game for the opposing team. Many quickly figured this out at first. Although the initial MMR needed to leverage this system was relatively low, Valve has gradually raised it over time. The recent update now sets it at 8500 MMR.
- Unfortunate for lower ranks
A significant issue with the Immortal Draft system lies in the lack of visibility regarding games. The matches played by these players are not accessible through public match logs or web application programming interfaces (APIs).
This implies that novice or aspiring players, rather than relying on advice from top-tier players, should look towards alternative resources for guidance when learning a particular hero in Dota 2. Often, experienced players who aim for higher MMRs prefer to use sites like Dota2ProTracker for their strategies. However, Immortal Draft seems to interfere with this step of the process.
Simultaneously, it could lead players to seek advice from other resources. Nevertheless, as pointed out by TeaGuvnor, Dota2ProTracker can be quite beneficial.
- In-game fighting
While the system may reduce squabbles among players due to disagreements over roles, there’s another perspective to consider. Players who have historically avoided certain individuals during team formation could still cross paths with them during an Immortal Draft. In many instances, this encounter might result in a less enjoyable gaming experience.
In the long run, it appears that Immortal Draft is going to persist, and for those of us who manage to reach 8500 MMR, we’ll have to adapt to its presence. Perhaps one day, Valve will take notice of ranked gameplay issues more seriously and address them. There are certainly opportunities for enhancement in Immortal Draft, and I hope they consider these improvements.
