Witch Hat Atelier’s Coco Carries on the Legacy of MHA’s Deku

For ten years, My Hero Academia has been the world’s most popular superhero anime, with over 100 million copies of the manga sold. While the final season ended in December 2025, the main character, Deku, is still celebrated as a symbol of dedication and never giving up. Though the story continues through the MHA: Vigilantes spin-off, Deku’s true impact will be felt through a new hero debuting this spring.

Studio Bug Films is releasing an anime adaptation of a popular manga in April, introducing the character Coco, a young witch. Similar to the hero Deku, Coco starts from modest beginnings and enters a world that seems impossible at first. She shares Deku’s enthusiasm, hard work, and gentle nature, and is poised to connect with a new wave of anime viewers.

Coco’s Journey in Witch Hat Atelier Started Exactly Like Deku’s in MHA

Deku rose to become a world-renowned hero, despite being born without a Quirk – a superpower that almost everyone possesses. Because of this, people often dismissed his dream of becoming a top hero, and many ridiculed him for it.

Coco felt the same way. When she was young, she became fascinated with magic and dreamed of becoming a witch. But she was born without any magical ability, so she had to accept that it was just a childhood dream.

Both Deku and Coco initially seemed unable to achieve their biggest dreams, until they uncovered a closely held secret from the people they looked up to. Deku learned the truth about One For All, the powerful ability All Might possessed, and received this power himself, allowing him to begin his journey as a hero. Similarly, Coco discovered the secrets of magic, becoming an apprentice and starting to learn the art herself.

Both Coco & Deku Inspire Their Peers to Push Themselves

A really charming thing about Deku in My Hero Academia is how fascinated he is with Quirks – he’s great at analyzing how they work. His enthusiasm and hopeful vision of what it means to be a hero are key to what makes the anime’s story so exciting.

Deku has a remarkable ability to inspire those around him, helping his classmates unlock their full potential. A prime example is Shoto Todoroki, whom Deku encourages to overcome his internal struggles and fully utilize his powerful fire quirk during the U.A. Sports Festival. Over time, Deku becomes a central figure and source of motivation for all of Class 1-A. This support proves invaluable later on, as Deku himself faces challenges and needs to rediscover his own purpose.

I’m completely captivated by Coco in Witch Hat Atelier! Her dedication to magic really fuels the story, kind of like how Deku’s passion is central to My Hero Academia. For as long as she can remember, she’s just watched witches do amazing things, but the moment she starts learning from Qifrey, you can instantly see how sharp she is. She picks things up so quickly, and it’s incredible! Even though she’s new to everything, she understands the basics of magic on a level that’s way beyond a beginner. It’s really exciting to watch her grow!

Coco, much like Deku, inspires those around her with her passion for magic and unwavering dedication. She views every mistake as a chance to learn and grow, and her discoveries often help her friends improve as well. This is particularly evident with Agott, who serves a similar role to Bakugo in Deku’s story, but without the rivalry or hostility.

Coco is a Natural Genius, but her True Gift is her Kind Heart & Perseverance

Coco isn’t naturally gifted like some of the other witches in Witch Hat Atelier, but she’s remarkably inventive for someone so young and new to magic. She quickly solved a difficult problem during her first day as an apprentice, using only beginner-level knowledge, simple tools, and a creative approach. In fact, she found a solution no one had ever discovered before.

It’s amazing to think about what Coco could accomplish as she learns more advanced magic. Right now, her biggest challenges are a lack of confidence and experience, but those shouldn’t stop her from continuing to grow and improve.

While the magical world of Witch Hat Atelier differs greatly from the superhero setting of My Hero Academia, both stories center on kind-hearted protagonists with strong morals who influence everyone around them. Now that Deku’s journey has ended and Coco’s is just starting, she has the potential to become a new symbol of growth and determination.
