Winona Ryder teases "bittersweet" Stranger Things ending

As a gamer who has been on this Stranger Things journey since its inception, I can’t help but feel like I’ve been playing a long, immersive video game that I don’t want to see end. The twists, turns, and character development have kept me hooked for years, just like how I’d stay up all night to level up my character or solve that one elusive puzzle in a game.

In a normal release pattern, the storyline of “Stranger Things” would be completed by now. However, due to various setbacks such as delays caused by the pandemic, writers’ and actors’ union strikes, we find ourselves having to wait until 2025 for the series to conclude its narrative.

The fifth and last season’s filming has been underway since January, and most of the cast have expressed their thoughts on the show’s conclusion (keeping spoilers at bay). Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven) described it as an “unusual” sensation for the series to be wrapping up, while Maya Hawke (Robin) discussed the exhausting process of creating what feels like eight movies. There appears to be a common mix of excitement, pride, and fatigue among the cast members.

Recently, Winona Ryder (Joyce Byers) has shared some insights about the final season. She mentioned in an interview with E! News that “we are still shooting and it will continue until the end of this year.” She added that the conclusion will be a mix of emotions as it will be both satisfying and sad.

Discussing her decade-long stint on the program, Ryder compared the journey to working on the film “Beetlejuice”. Just as nobody foresaw the explosive success of “Stranger Things”, turning into a cultural juggernaut, she remarked, “It’s been ten years now, which is mind-blowing. I never imagined it would be this big; it’s almost like ‘Beetlejuice’. Frankly, I don’t think any of us anticipated the show becoming what it did.”

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my astonishment after witnessing the heart-stopping conclusion of Stranger Things 4. The once peaceful town of Hawkins now teeters on the edge of ruin following our fierce confrontation with Vecna. The ominous influence of the Upside Down has seeped into our reality, and the team is left reeling in disbelief as it becomes increasingly clear that this war against the shadows is far from over.

As of now, we don’t know when “Stranger Things 5” will be released. However, our best guess is that it might debut around 2025, which means it would be about nine years since the story began.

Winona Ryder’s latest project is Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which premieres September 6.
