Summary
- Willy Chavarria has become the ACLU’s first fashion designer Artist Ambassador, using his platform to support LGBTQ+ and immigrant rights, following recent runway shows that protested immigration crackdowns and promoted human dignity.
Willy Chavarria is now serving as the inaugural Fashion Designer Artist Ambassador for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
As a dedicated gamer, I proudly stand alongside advocates like Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Padma Lakshmi, supporting the ACLU in their fight for the rights and liberties of LGBTQ+ individuals and immigrants alike. Together, we aim to uphold the fundamental values of equality and freedom for all.
As a passionate advocate for change, I firmly believe that art, music, and fashion hold immense power to shape our understanding and advocacy for social justice and human dignity. Delighted to contribute more, I’m eager to leverage my own platform towards the empowerment of others, as expressed in a statement shared with WWD.
The latest news arrives following Chavarria’s SS26 runway show in Paris, where he began by critiquing U.S President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. This was evident in the depiction of harsh conditions at detention centers for immigrants, as models dressed in white uniforms lined up with their heads lowered. Coinciding with this, Chavarria launched a partnership with the Human Rights Campaign and Tinder, revisiting the “Who we love defines us” graphic tees from his FW25 collection.
During January’s FW25 Paris premiere, the designer chose to utilize the event as a stage for protest as well. As the show concluded, a recording of Episcopal Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde’s sermon from Trump’s inauguration was played, urging compassion towards immigrants and the LGBTQ+ community from the president.
After being announced as part of the ACLU’s Creatives for Freedom campaign in April, the designer expressed, “Given the current situation, it’s crucial that our actions and words uphold the protection of human dignity and our fundamental rights.
It’s important for us to unite, demonstrating our unity rather than divisions. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) serves as a crucial guide in determining where and how we can work together to safeguard and uphold democracy.
