As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours navigating the vast universe of Star Trek, I have to say that my perspective on Captain James T. Kirk, or rather William Shatner, has undergone a significant shift. While his reputation for being somewhat contentious is well-documented, this recent revelation about his dedication and professionalism during a difficult time in his life has left me quite impressed.
William Shatner is famously known for his strong reputation, especially in reference to his role on the Original Series. As Captain James T. Kirk, Shatner often found himself at odds with fellow cast members, most notably George Takei and Leonard Nimoy. It’s no secret that Shatner has a long-standing feud with George Takei, and he had a strained relationship with close friend Leonard Nimoy in the years leading up to Nimoy’s death.
People may not realize how dedicated and serious he is about his work.
Back in 2003, I stumbled upon an article on Star Trek.com that offered a fresh perspective on Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner. During the filming of “The Devil in the Dark,” something unusual happened that made me see Shatner in a whole new light. On what most thought was just an ordinary day for everyone involved, Shatner took a leave – but it turned out, this wasn’t your typical day off for him.
According to Paskey’s account, it wasn’t until after the actor had departed that anyone realized something was amiss. It was later discovered that Shatner had been working all day despite learning about his father’s demise.
“As soon as we wrapped with that show, Bill left. We came to find out that as he shot all day long, he was preparing to get on an airplane to go home — his father just passed away. No one knew until he was actually gone. And, y’know, that says a lot for the dedication of the man.”
Despite William Shatner often receiving a tough reputation, whether it’s deserved or not, this anecdote showcases another side of him – one that highlights his dedication and multitasking abilities. Losing a loved one is a deeply personal experience, and based on reports, Shatner managed his grief privately rather than burdening others with it.
It’s quite surprising to learn that Shatner is spoken of with such affection; it’s not a tale we get to hear frequently, even though this particular interview dates back more than two decades.
