William Shatner reflects on his Star Trek career

As a lifelong Trekkie, I can attest that William Shatner‘s impact on Star Trek and popular culture is nothing short of monumental. With over seven decades in the entertainment industry, he has not only brought James T. Kirk to life but also etched his name into the annals of science fiction history. His role as Captain Kirk was instrumental in turning Star Trek from a niche interest to a global phenomenon.

William Shatner is more than just a Star Trek legend; he’s a prominent figure in the realm of entertainment as well. With over 70 years of professional acting under his belt, he leaves an impression wherever he works. For us, his most significant mark has undoubtedly been on the Star Trek universe, where he initially took on the role of the series’ first official captain.

Through multiple seasons of “Star Trek: The Original Series” and “Star Trek: The Animated Series,” as well as seven films, Shatner breathed life into James T. Kirk, ultimately transforming both Kirk and Star Trek from an intriguing science fiction conversation topic among classmates to a globally recognized blockbuster franchise.

He helped pave the way for the nearly 60 years of Star Trek and now the 93-year-old Shatner has returned to the franchise he helped cement. His version of Kirk, played wonderfully by Sam Witwer, returned for a special video as part of the Roddenberry Archive and in conjunction with Paramount Global (the parent company of Star Trek).

As a gamer, I must admit, it felt like stepping into familiar territory, albeit unexpectedly. My role in the project had been kept under wraps, with little chatter circulating about its short-term future. So when it suddenly emerged, both fans and media were taken aback. Not only were they surprised, but there was a palpable surge of curiosity surrounding me and my iconic character once more.

To such an extent, the Roddenberry Archive has made available a fresh interview with Shatner, during which he discusses aspects of his career, his relationship with series creator and the archive’s namesake, Gene Roddenberry, as well as intriguing subjects.

After the debut of the Unification short movie, not just Shatner, but also Robin Curtis and George Takei, Shatner’s long-standing rival, were interviewed separately in two different videos.

Instead of George Takei portraying Hikaru Sulu, it was Curtis who took up the role this time. She returned as Saavik, a character she previously played, in the short film. In this story, Saavik appears to be organizing a group of individuals to encounter Kirk after the events depicted in Star Trek Generations; the movie where Kirk’s death is portrayed.

It’s seemingly the afterlife, but with no dialogue it’s very open to interoperation.

It was wonderful to be reunited with her and we’re eagerly anticipating more opportunities to witness Takei, Shatner, and Curtis in the Star Trek universe once more.
