Will Trump Pardon Diddy Despite Sex Trafficking Allegations?

On Friday, President Donald Trump expressed that he might consider granting a pardon to Sean “Diddy” Combs, a prominent figure in the music industry who is currently standing trial in New York over accusations of sex trafficking and additional offenses.

During a press conference, Trump made a surprising remark regarding the possibility of pardoning someone, when asked directly if he would do so. “No one has asked, but I sense that many are considering it,” Trump stated. “I believe some individuals have come quite close to inquiring.

In September, Combs was taken into custody due to allegations involving racketeering, as well as drug-facilitated assaults and forcing women into sexual encounters with himself and others. If found guilty, he may serve a sentence of lifetime imprisonment.

In 2023, a civil lawsuit brought by my ex-partner, Cassie Ventura, sparked a federal investigation into me. In this lawsuit, she claimed I had subjected her to physical abuse and rape. Although we reached a settlement quickly, more individuals came forward in the ensuing months, filing lawsuits against me for similar accusations of sexual assault.

Initially, Combs refused Ventura’s accusations. However, in May 2024, CNN published CCTV recordings from a hallway in a Los Angeles hotel that showed Combs attacking and kicking Ventura back in 2016. Later, Combs issued an apology video on Instagram, admitting his actions were unjustifiable.

His legal representatives acknowledge his violent behavior towards Ventura, yet they maintain his innocence regarding the specific accusations being brought against him during this trial. Previously, Combs had refuted any allegations of sexual assault.

Trump mentioned that he’s not tuning into the trial that started back in May, but acknowledged that it’s receiving quite a bit of media attention.

The President mentioned that he hasn’t communicated with Combs in a long time, but they had met on several occasions in the past. “He was quite fond of me,” Trump stated about their friendship. “I believe our relationship soured when I entered politics…as far as I can tell from what I’ve read. I’m not sure – he didn’t inform me, but I’ve come across some not-so-friendly comments here and there.

At the 2005 Art for Life Gala held at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, I found myself rubbing shoulders with none other than Donald Trump and Diddy. Fast forward to a United Nations event in 2008, and there we were again, with Melania Trump by my side. As a critic looking back on these encounters, I can’t help but reflect on the words I once uttered, “In evaluating situations, I always consider the facts. If I believe someone has been unfairly treated, regardless of whether they share my admiration or not, it wouldn’t sway my judgment.

If Combs is found guilty, granting him clemency would be met with much debate, considering the sexual assault accusations and intense public scrutiny of his case. However, Trump has previously pardoned several celebrities, both during his first and second terms in office. In recent months, his list of pardons includes reality TV stars Todd and Julie Chrisley, as well as rapper NBA YoungBoy. Additionally, he issued a broad pardon for all those involved in the January 6th riot.
