Will Timothy Olyphant return as Cobb Vanth in The Mandalorian & Grogu?
As a seasoned Star Wars gamer with a soft spot for Timothy Olyphant‘s gritty portrayal of Cobb Vanth, I can’t help but feel a twinge of excitement every time there’s a whisper about his potential return. The character’s growth from a simple town marshal to a respected figure on Tatooine was captivating and left me wanting more.
Previously, character Cobb Vanth found himself in Boba Fett’s bacta tank, having narrowly escaped a gunfight with Cad Bane – Boba Fett’s greatest adversary – as depicted in the seventh chapter of the series, “The Book of Boba Fett”.
Following the events of “The Book of Boba Fett”, not much is clear about Cobb Vanth’s whereabouts. However, given his recovery from injuries, it’s plausible that he might have continued in his role as Marshal of Mos Pelgo (Freetown). As Boba Fett appeared to be preparing to depart Tatooine at the end of the series, there’s a chance that Fennec and Boba could have left the planet. This potential departure might have paved the way for Cobb Vanth to assume the position as Daimyo of Mos Espa’s territories. Given his high standing among the people of Mos Pelgo and his ability to maintain law and order, Cobb Vanth seems an ideal candidate for this role on Tatooine.
Indeed, it’s just conjecture since we’re unaware of Vanth’s fate following the end of “The Book of Boba Fett.” Nevertheless, given Timothy Olyphant’s charismatic portrayal of the gunslinger, many fans would undoubtedly welcome his return in “The Mandalorian & Grogu.”
So what role could Cobb Vanth play should he return in the Mando movie?
During Season 2 of The Mandalorian, Cobb Vanth and Din Djarin formed a friendship, indicating that Vanth holds Djarin in high regard. As Djarin resumes his role as a bounty hunter, this time with a greater mission, there’s potential for the two to collaborate again. If Din returns to Tatooine, he might reconnect with Cobb Vanth, especially since his quest to eliminate Imperial Remnants could lead him back to the desert planet. In such a scenario, Vanth could offer Djarin valuable insights about Imperial Remnant activities. It’s possible that Vanth becomes suspicious of Imperial activities on Tatooine and contacts Mando directly, or perhaps Mando arrives on Tatooine and encounters ‘The Marshal’ himself.
If Jon Favreau chooses to reintroduce Cobb Vanth, it’s likely he has a significant part in the upcoming movie. However, it’s also possible that Vanth could make an appearance before or after ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’. Given Tatooine’s pivotal role in Star Wars, there’s a strong possibility we’ll see Cobb Vanth again in future projects like ‘Skeleton Crew’, Dave Filoni’s crossover film, ‘Ahsoka’ Season 2, or even another season of ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’.
Regarding Timothy Olyphant’s thoughts, he hasn’t definitively stated that Cobb Vanth won’t come back.
If I had [talks with Filoni], I wouldn’t tell you.
He also added that it’s a fun job and he’s always ready to come back for more:
It was a ball working on those things and those guys know if they call me I’d show up. I don’t care if it’s a big giant thing or just to show up for an afternoon. It’s a fun gig.
Since Lucasfilm remains secretive about the cast of “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” we can only guess whether Marshal Freetown will reappear. It seems likely that all of Mando’s companions and allies might make an appearance at some stage. If Vanth does come back, let him don his own Mandalorian armor – he deserves it after everything he’s accomplished.
The Mandalorian & Grogu will premiere in theaters May 22, 2026.
