Will there ever be a live-action Minions movie? “God, I hope not," says director

As a child of the 80s and 90s, I grew up with the magic of Disney animation, from Mickey Mouse to The Little Mermaid. So when I heard about the idea of live-action Minions, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia mixed with a healthy dose of skepticism.

Regardless of whether you’ve watched the “Despicable Me” films or not, it’s hard not to recognize the Minions. These little yellow characters wear denims, speak a goofy language that isn’t quite English, and often find themselves in zany, comedic situations. They initially appeared as henchmen for the villain Gru in the first “Despicable Me” movie in 2010, but they have since taken the spotlight; their standalone film, “Minions,” released in 2015, grossed over a billion dollars at the box office. You can see them on TV commercials, cereal boxes, and possibly even watching you here and now. They are numerous indeed.

I’d never thought of the prospect of live-action Minions before, but director Chris Renaud — who’s helmed three out of the four Despicable Me movies, including the new one that came out earlier this summer — was asked about that prospect during a chat with Film Hounds. Will we ever see the wacky yellow comedy machines in live-action? “God, I hope not,” Renaud said. “That’s my answer.”

If there were conversations like that, I haven’t been privy to them. But for me, what defines the world is that it is animated and it allows us to get away with what we get away with. Like locking a Minion in the vending machine, or you know, blowing up Gru when he attacks Vector. These are really cartoon ideas, like what would have been in a Bugs Bunny cartoon.

Renaud brings up valid arguments, yet it’s quite a pointed query considering that Disney has raked in billions by modernizing their classic animated films into live-action ones. The upcoming movie to receive this treatment is none other than Snow White, scheduled for release on March 31 of the following year.

To set the record straight, that trailer has garnered around 73 thousand likes and close to 900 thousand dislikes, indicating a fair amount of criticism towards the practice of remaking classic animated films into live-action versions, at least among online communities. However, these productions tend to generate significant revenue, which is what primarily concerns studios.

Universal, not Disney, produces the “Despicable Me” and “Minions” films, similar to how other studios operate. It never crossed my mind that a live-action “Minions” project was in the works until I read Renaud’s recent interview. However, given the success of these movies, I have a strong feeling it will be realized eventually. Whether or not you share the same excitement is up to you! Your kids, though, are likely to adore it.
