Will there be a Black Doves season 2? Everything you need to know
As a long-time fan of gripping dramas, I can confidently say that the upcoming season of “Black Doves” has me utterly thrilled! With its intricate plotlines and captivating characters, this show has managed to draw me in like few others have before.
Black Doves ending spoilers follow.
Despite debuting on Netflix as recently as December 5th, it’s clear that the festive spy series “Black Doves” is destined for a return in its second season.
In August, during the Edinburgh TV Festival, we received updates about renewal, and this information was further verified through posts on the official social media accounts of the streaming platform.
Wondering about the second season of “Black Doves” and when fresh episodes might air? Here’s a rundown on what you should expect – just remember, there may be some spoilers ahead for those who haven’t caught up.
What is the likely release date for Black Doves season 2?
An intriguing query, yet unfortunately, I don’t have the response for it right now. However, as per Netflix, production for Black Doves‘ second season is underway.
Initially, the first group of episodes were based in London during Christmas, which unexpectedly impacted the storyline, visual aesthetics, and most notably, the music. It’s yet unclear if this holiday theme will persist in a potential second series, hinting at a possible winter release in December.
From the start, it appears that the series “Black Doves” was commissioned for an unusual two-seasons run (as reported by Deadline), which undeniably added a touch of additional stress to the showrunner Joe Barton.
He expressed to the media outlet, “The pressure I feel now is unique. Previously, when doing a show, you always strive for success to secure another season. But now that we’ve been given a chance to return, the pressure is more about ensuring our work justifies the faith they have in us.
What will happen in Black Doves season 2?
At the conclusion of the final episode of “Black Doves”, it is revealed that the individual responsible for Jason’s death was indeed unmasked, and we come to understand that he was not just any person but a deep-cover MI5 agent, who harbored genuine affection for Helen.
During a high-stakes confrontation where Alex, leader of the criminal organization known as the Clarks, brandished a firearm, it emerged that her son Trent, who was involved in the unfortunate accidental demise of Ambassador Chen and nearly triggered an international crisis, was the one who had fired the gun.
In a quandary, Helen, filled with intense anger and desire for retribution, grappled with the decision to carry out her plan of fatal retaliation. She weighed the factors: his advanced age and the potential repercussions for her family’s wellbeing, knowing that crossing the Clarks could lead to trouble they might not want to face. It’s evident that the Clark family is not a group one would wish to antagonize.
However, despite Helen pointing her gun at Trent, it was actually Sam who committed the act. This action was driven by his deep affection for Helen, but it would result in significant personal consequences. Previously trying to abandon his hitman lifestyle and reunite with his beloved Michael, Sam is now a fugitive.
It was also a full circle moment for Sam and Helen’s friendship; let’s not forget that earlier in the season we’d learned that Helen had tried to walk away from the Black Doves organisation before the arrival of her first child, before receiving an SOS call from Sam who had been compromised.
Helen rushed in to rescue Sam from danger, fatally wounding his assailant. Subsequently, she struck an agreement with her superior Reed: as long as staying at the organization provided safety for Sam’s partner Michael and a comprehensive overhaul of Sam’s shooting incident, she would remain.
Apart from saving Helen’s conscience by killing Trent, Sam’s actions mirrored what he believed his friend would do in a similar situation.
Who will be in the Black Doves season 2 cast?
As a gamer, I can’t help but feel hooked on the intriguing lives of these characters from Black Doves. So here’s to hoping we get to reconnect with each one of them in the upcoming season!
In the thick of it all, I found myself torn between my feelings for Jason and the familiar warmth of my marriage with Wallace. Though there was a time when I considered leaving for greener pastures with him, ultimately, I realized that the tranquility and bond we share is too precious to let go. So, here’s the deal – I’m sticking with Wallace.
Sadly, unlike others who found resolution, Sam and Michael’s reunion storyline was tragically disrupted by the finale’s grim events. Currently, it seems that Sam is in hiding due to London being a potentially perilous location for him. However, we remain optimistic that destiny might one day bring them their desired happiness. With Sam now joining forces with Hector, there’s a possibility they could bring down the Clark family.
Additionally, we have the duo Williams and Eleanor, who appear to share a bond beyond friendship, as suggested by their teamwork – and the fact that she carries a flamethrower.
With all of this in mind, we’d expect a lot of the main cast to be back for a second season:
- Keira Knightley as Helen
- Ben Whishaw as Sam
- Sarah Lancashire as Reed
- Andrew Buchan as Wallace
- Omari Douglas as Michael
- Ella Lily Hyland as Williams
- Gabrielle Creevy as Eleanor
- Isabella Wei as Kai-Ming
- Kathryn Hunter as Lenny
It’s been mentioned that some of these characters might reappear in season two, as per the discussion by Joe Barton (through Netflix’s Tudum platform).
Regarding Williams, Eleanor, and Kai-Ming – the three of them celebrating Christmas together – he remarked that they seemed to be clearly developing a small circle or clique.
Kai-Ming might need to give up his lifestyle as a party girl who uses heroin. Perhaps they could establish a small assassin business from their houseboat instead. That sounds intriguing, I’d love to imagine it.
As for Lenny, it turned out that his survival following the confrontation with Sam, when he refused to take Hector’s life one time too many, was initially not part of the plan. Barton disclosed this information later on.
“But we just love Kathryn Hunter so much that we were like, ‘We can’t. We’ve got to keep her around,” he said. “[There’s] going to be a second [season].'”
In a broader sense, Barton suggested that he enjoys the concept of Helen being further immersed in the spy community, as the risk associated with her role escalates alongside Wallace’s expanding political influence.
He also mentioned “seeing Sam back in London”, as well as the prospect of throwing lots of the same characters “up against one another again, and maybe make things more dangerous and challenging for them.”
We can’t wait.
Black Doves is available on Netflix, and a season 2 is on the way.
