Okay, so I’m a huge fan of The Last of Us, and I was starting to panic about whether we’d get more seasons after this one. Thankfully, the head of HBO just gave us an update! They’ve talked about whether Season 3 will be the end of the show, which is a huge relief to hear them address directly.
Season 2 adapted the first part of the second game, and the show’s creator, Craig Mazin, has confirmed they won’t deviate from the original story.
So, I was reading an interview with the head of HBO, Casey Bloys, and he basically said they’re still planning on ending The Last of Us after season 3. But, they’re not saying never to more stories in that world, which is good news for us fans! They don’t want to completely shut the door on that universe, so maybe we’ll get something else down the line.
I think Craig probably went that way. We usually leave the door unlocked, so that’s likely where he’s headed.
Following the success of The Last of Us, Mazin will next be developing a series based on the video game Baldur’s Gate, which is set within the Dungeons & Dragons universe.

As a huge gamer, I was so thrilled to see all the praise for Baldur’s Gate 3 last year! It was a massive hit with both critics and players, and it totally deserved winning Game of the Year at The Game Awards – and even Digital Spy named it their best game of 2023, which is awesome!
Okay, so from what I’ve seen, the The Last of Us show doesn’t seem like a straight retelling of the game. It feels more like they’re continuing the story after the game’s ending, which, let’s be real, left things pretty open for a sequel anyway.
Bloys added that Mazin is currently working on the third season of The Last of Us, but he was the one who originally pitched the idea for Baldur’s Gate to HBO.
He’s really enthusiastic about it and we’ve discussed it, but right now he’s prioritizing work on The Last of Us. He plans to return to Baldur’s Gate when he has more availability.
