Will Taylor Swift’s London Eras Tour Shows Go Ahead After the Foiled Terror Plot in Vienna?

As a seasoned cinema enthusiast with a penchant for attending concerts and a keen eye for security measures, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and apprehension regarding Taylor Swift’s upcoming shows at Wembley Stadium. Having attended numerous events in the past, I’ve learned to appreciate the diligence of security teams and their efforts to ensure our safety. However, the recent foiled terrorist attacks connected to her concerts in Vienna have cast a long shadow over these London shows.

Fans of Taylor Swift in London are eagerly anticipating her upcoming performances at Wembley Stadium from August 15th to 20th. However, there’s a growing concern among them due to the thwarted terrorist attacks linked to her concerts in Vienna, Austria, which were later canceled. This has left many fans speculating if the U.K. shows will indeed take place as scheduled.

Taylor Swift, TIME’s 2023 Person of the Year, hasn’t issued any comments regarding the impending attack or her forthcoming London performances, which are part of her record-breaking Eras Tour, surpassing $1 billion in gross sales.

Starting from this coming Sunday, Swift’s official site indicates that the planned London events remain unchanged. Moreover, various authorities in London have spoken out to inform the public that their primary concern is safety, promising to closely examine any updates before making announcements.

A representative from the Metropolitan Police, responsible for policing Greater London, stated via email to TIME on Sunday that there seems to be no sign that the investigations currently being conducted by Austrian authorities will influence any forthcoming events happening here in London.

At the Met, we collaborate closely with venue security units and other allies to establish robust safety and law enforcement strategies.

On Thursdays, UK’s Police Minister, Diana Johnson, announced on the British radio station LBC that law enforcement would increase their vigilance for the upcoming London performances.

“Johnson stated that the police will examine all available information and make judgments, as they evaluate each incident occurring within the nation, which is a part of their role.”

In the meantime, it has been confirmed by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, that the Swift concerts will take place in London, the capital city of England.

“We’ll continue our close collaboration with law enforcement, aiming to ensure that the Taylor Swift concerts in London proceed securely,” is a paraphrased version of the original statement made by Mayor Khan.

At this point, Wembley Stadium hasn’t issued an official update about additional safety measures for Taylor Swift’s upcoming concerts. However, on their Eras Tour-related page, they have mentioned a rule that was enforced during her previous June performance: fans are not permitted to gather outside any entrance or on the Olympic Steps in front of the stadium.

On August 7th, the organizers cancelled Swift’s three sold-out shows at Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna due to security concerns. This decision came after the arrest of two individuals suspected of planning a terrorist attack in Vienna, with authorities revealing a third suspect had been apprehended in relation to the thwarted plot during a press conference held in the Austrian capital on Friday.

Baracuda Music, the concert organizer, informed fans that they would receive refunds for their ticket purchases, as announced on Taylor Swift’s official website under the listings for the Vienna shows.

The concerts scheduled by Taylor Swift in Vienna have been called off, as police disclosed they found evidence of a planned terrorist attack.

On August 8, as reported by the Associated Press, Austrian officials disclosed that one of the primary suspects admitted to orchestrating the attack. This individual is a 19-year-old native of Austria.

According to Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, the leader of State Security and Intelligence, it was revealed that his intention was to cause harm in an outdoor region near the stadium, aiming to kill multiple individuals with either knives or improvised explosive devices he had created.

A man residing in Ternitz, a town south of Vienna, reportedly swore loyalty to ISIS, as stated by Vienna State Police Director Franz Ruf at a press briefing held on Wednesday.

The 17-year old Austrian, recently employed by a company catering to concert venues, is one of the suspects; authorities found Islamic State and al-Qaida related documents at his house.)

At a press conference, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner revealed that one of the three suspects is an 18-year-old individual from Iraq, who has been identified as having had contact with the primary suspect.

During the press conference, Karner stated that while the individual had interacted with the primary instigator, there is no direct link between him and the attack plot. However, it was recently discovered that on August 6th, he pledged loyalty to ISIS.

Following the scrapped concerts, fans struggled to come to terms with missing out on watching their favorite pop icon perform and singing their cherished tunes. A multitude of disheartened fans gathered at Corneliusgasse, a location that resonated with them as it shares the same name as “Cornelia Street,” a beloved track from Taylor Swift’s 2019 album, Lover.

At the Swift’s Eras Tour, the crowd exchanged friendship bands, a common practice, while they all sung together.
