Will Smith’s Underrated Superhero Movie Hancock Now A Global Streaming Hit On HBO Max

Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics (a 42% score on Rotten Tomatoes), a recent Will Smith superhero film is now hugely popular on HBO Max. For decades, Will Smith has been a major figure in entertainment, starring in iconic blockbusters like Men in Black and Independence Day, as well as inspiring films such as The Pursuit of Happyness and King Richard.

As a huge movie fan, I was surprised to see that Will Smith’s Hancock is doing really well on HBO Max! It’s currently in the top 10 globally and is a hit in 21 countries, including places like Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico. It’s a bit strange though – you can’t actually watch it on HBO Max here in the U.S. right now.

Okay, so ‘Hancock’ is a really interesting movie. Will Smith is fantastic as this super powerful, but seriously flawed, hero. He’s constantly battling a drinking problem while trying to save Los Angeles, and let me tell you, his rescues aren’t exactly graceful – there’s a lot of collateral damage! The story kicks off when he saves Jason Bateman’s character, Ray, a PR guy who decides it’s his mission to fix Hancock’s image. And things get even more complicated because Ray’s wife, Mary – played by Charlize Theron – is hiding a pretty big secret of her own. It’s a fun ride!

The film Hancock was a huge financial hit, earning over $620 million globally on a tiny $150,000 budget. However, professional critics didn’t love it, giving it a 42% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While audiences liked it more with a score of 59%, it still isn’t considered a critically acclaimed film.

Despite being overlooked by many, Hancock is a surprisingly good superhero film – better than its ratings suggest. Released in the same year as the first Iron Man, it cleverly played with superhero conventions before audiences grew tired of the genre. Interestingly, Hancock actually earned more at the box office than Iron Man, bringing in $585 million worldwide.

For years, a follow-up to the movie Hancock has been discussed, but it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. There’s been speculation that Will Smith, Charlize Theron, and Jason Bateman might return as their characters, and that the story could delve into the backstory of Hancock and Mary before they moved to Los Angeles.

Last February, Smith shared some news about Hancock 2, mentioning a promising new concept and that they were considering Zendaya for a part. Here’s what he said:

There’s an exciting development regarding Hancock 2 that I haven’t mentioned yet. I’ll share a small detail: Zendaya is currently being considered for a part in the movie.

Although a sequel to the Will Smith film Hancock hasn’t been officially confirmed, the movie remains popular with viewers nearly 18 years after its release. This suggests there’s still strong interest in a continuation of the story, and it could be just as successful in theaters worldwide as the original.
