Will Matty allow feelings to get in the way of her mission in Matlock?

As a seasoned fan of the crime drama genre, I must say that Matlock’s first season has been nothing short of captivating. But let me tell you, dear reader, the latest episode left me reeling! Matty, our plucky protagonist, finds herself in quite the pickle with her former adversary, Olympia.

In the fourth episode of the first season of Matlock, Matty applied her somewhat rusty courtroom abilities. This experience, however, seemed to unveil more about Olympia than she had anticipated.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Matlock season 1, episode 4.

Matty approached her mission to dismantle the law firm with a certain level of innocence, believing she could easily gather the necessary information swiftly. However, reality often differs from expectations. Even if we were not in a TV show, things rarely unfold as quickly as one might anticipate.

It’s only natural that she would forge connections with different people at the law firm. If these relationships were limited to fellow associates, that wouldn’t be much of a concern. However, the most recent development seems to hint at a budding friendship between her and Olympia, which could be somewhat unexpected.

Olympia shared more about her personal life in Matlock season 1, episode 4

In the latest episode, Matty comes to understand that Olympia’s laptop is crucial. Unfortunately, they can’t comb through the entire device while Olympia is in court, but Matty has devised a clever strategy. She intends to plant a decoy, simulating a coffee spill, which would render any potential data recovery from the laptop impossible.

Olympia realized she hadn’t saved something important, prompting Matty to speculate if this might be connected to his ongoing investigation. However, as it turned out, it had a more private connotation.

During the program, Matty pointed out that the judge used to be a Marine and didn’t show a lot of tolerance. This caught Olympia’s attention, but not because Matty appeared to have knowledge about the judge. Instead, it brought back memories for Olympia of her own father, who was also a former Marine.

Essentially, the item without any backup was a voicemail from her father, possibly the last one he ever left. It’s apparent that Matty regrets taking Olympia’s laptop with this message on it. Unfortunately, there seems to be no way to return the recording to Olympia without revealing Matty’s actions and current activities.

As I sat there, game controller gripped tightly, I found myself reflecting: Matty reminded me, we’re not friends. She’s got a mission and can’t let feelings cloud her judgment. But it’s evident this could be a stumbling block for her. This journey is proving tougher than I ever thought it would be.

Matlock airs Thursdays at 9/8c on CBS. Catch up the following day on Paramount+.
