Will & Grace star hospitalized twice in one night with recurring ‘heart issue’
As someone who has followed Sean Hayes’ career since the golden days of Will & Grace, I have always admired his talent and resilience. However, after reading about his frequent health scares and battles with AFib, I can’t help but feel like he should change his name to Sean “ER” Hayes!
Last night, I found myself in a state of panic when my beloved actor, Sean Hayes from Will & Grace, had to be rushed to the hospital not once, but twice! It seems his heart has been causing him some trouble again. As an ardent fan, it’s moments like these that really tug at my heartstrings. Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery and good health for this incredible talent.
The 54-year-old actor experiences atrial fibrillation, frequently known as “AFib,” a relatively widespread but severe heart issue that results in an irregular heart rhythm.
In my experience as a lifestyle expert, when Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) happens, it’s like the upper part of your heart loses its rhythm and beats independently from the lower chambers, which can lead to an irregular heartbeat. This information aligns with what I’ve learned from credible sources like the Mayo Clinic.
This can lead to shortness of breath or dizziness or more serious side effects like blood clots, stroke or heart failure.
To help restore the heart’s regular beating pattern, healthcare providers may apply an electric current through a defibrillator pad placed on the patient’s chest.
In the most recent installment of their SmartLess podcast, alongside fellow host Will Arnett, they disclosed that Hayes had to seek immediate medical attention when his heart condition awoke him during the night.
After hearing guest Hugh Grant discuss his fatigue from ‘jet-lag’ and the toll traveling takes on him at 64, Arnett openly acknowledged this fact.
Grant expressed that he was no longer able to continue with the journey from London to Los Angeles, suggesting it may be an issue related to his advancing years. He shared that he had woken up extremely hungry many hours earlier and felt as if his heart was made of soft modeling clay.
It was then that Arnett revealed Hayes’ recent heart-related health scare.
‘Hugh, you should know this that Sean, two, three nights ago, woke up in the middle of the night with a heart issue, drove himself to Cedars-Sinai [Medical Center]—didn’t wake up his husband,’ the 54-year-old comedian said.
Upon reaching the hospital at Cedars-Sinai, the medical team promptly prepared and administered anesthesia to Hayes before performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) using defibrillation pads.
After that, Arnett said that Hayes ‘drove home.’
About an hour afterwards, Hayes encountered the same heart problem once more, leading him to drive himself back to the hospital.
About an hour past, he awoke to visit the restroom once more, hopped in his car, and returned to Cedars where he was punished again, as Arnett disclosed.
Hayes added: ‘And then we had dinner that night.’
Hey there, I see you’re a bit out of sync due to jet lag, not that I’m rubbing it in or anything…,” I playfully jabbed at Grant, who then retorted, “Well, I am indeed, and your teasing just makes me feel embarrassed.
Hayes has spoken candidly about his battle with AFib in the past.
On Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2021, the celebrity openly shared that he frequently requires medical care due to his serious health issue.
He shared that he has Atrial Fibrillation, which causes his heart to beat unusually fast. This can make him feel as if he’s about to pass out. When he visits the Emergency Room at Cedars-Sinai, he feels like a regular character named Norm from Cheers because he spends so much time there.
After managing Atrial Fibrillation for such a long time, Hayes is well-versed in the appropriate measures medical professionals should take to regulate his heart rhythm again.
He confidently stated, “I’m clear on the actions that should unfold,” preceding his customary explanation to the crowd, which is usually shared with hospital staff.
‘”Look, this is how this gonna go. You’re gonna give me propofol. I’m gonna go out, you’re gonna go, ‘Clear,’ and I’m gonna go home,”‘ he recounted.
‘And that’s all this, because it snaps you back into regular rhythm.’
Hayes is no stranger to health scares.
In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres back in 2017, he shared a past incident where he found himself hurried to the emergency room due to severe abdominal discomfort.
During his hospital stay, it was discovered that Hayes’ small intestine had suffered a rupture – an uncommon health issue that is regarded as quite rare.
In a heart-stopping moment, I found myself rushing to the emergency room, and let me tell you, I’m incredibly grateful for that decision. In an unexpected turn of events, a condition unfolded where my small intestine ruptured, releasing harmful substances into my system.
I practically bounced through the door, ready to perform some magic on this thing. Snip! I removed the flawed section, and then, winking mischievously, I fastened it back with a trusty chip clip, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
He said that he had to be put on ‘so many drugs’ that make you feel ‘high out of your mind.’
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Hayes gained widespread recognition by appearing on the popular NBC comedy series “Will & Grace.
The series primarily explores the dynamic friendship between Will Truman, a gay attorney, and Grace Adler, a non-Jewish straight woman who owns an interior design business.
On the show, Hayes portrays Jack McFarland, a gay actor who is Will’s best friend.
Originally airing on NBC for eight seasons between 1998 and 2006, Will & Grace was subsequently brought back to life by the network for an additional three seasons that ran from 2017 until 2020.
In both its initial airing and comeback, this series garnered an impressive 18 Primetime Emmy Awards and received critical acclaim for its talented cast, who were praised extensively and honored with numerous awards for their acting prowess.
Hayes received one Primetime Emmy Award and four Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards for his performance as Jack McFarland.
