After over 26 years of marriage, more information has come to light about the reasons behind the divorce of Eric McCormack, star of Will & Grace, and his former wife, Janet Holden.
Okay, so after over three years of legal proceedings, my client Janet’s divorce is finally settled. As many of you know, she initially filed back in November 2023, citing irreconcilable differences. At the time, she requested spousal support for herself and asked the court to prevent her ex from receiving any. It’s a relief to have reached a resolution that addresses those needs and allows both parties to move forward.
A judge signed off on a settlement on Monday where the 62-year-old actor will pay his ex-wife $10,000 each month until 2035, according to People magazine.
In nine years, Eric can request a change to the support amount, which was originally calculated based on his $92,000 annual income and Janet’s $23,000 annual income, according to legal documents reviewed by the publication.
She will also get half of the ongoing payments he earns from his work, which is expected to be a significant amount considering his long and successful career.
Janet filed for divorce from the actor in November 2023 after 26 years of marriage, stating they had differences that couldn’t be resolved.
She requested financial support from her husband and asked the court to prevent him from receiving any such support himself.

The ex-couple also agreed on how to split the earnings from Eric’s work done while they were married, using a standard industry system for dividing those payments.
Some of the projects he’s worked on include the TV shows Will & Grace and Dead Like Me, the reality competition Lego Masters, and the podcast Just Jack and Will.
According to the report, the couple was married from August 3, 1997, until they legally separated on February 12, 2024.
Janet received ownership of half of any copyrights or other intellectual property created during the marriage.
As part of their agreement, the former couple will also split ownership of several properties, bank accounts, vehicles, and a trailer, according to reports.
Eric will retain any earnings from his previous work, such as Lonesome Dove: The Series and the Still Here Hollywood podcast, both before and after the marriage.
I was really surprised to learn that Eric and Janet actually had a formal, written agreement in place regarding their finances and any future support for their son, Finnigan, who’s 23. TMZ reported on it last autumn, and it just seems like a very practical way for them to handle things, even after their split.
Details of the agreement emerged almost a year after McCormack seemed to have moved on, as he was seen with Sue Conder in New York City last February, appearing to be a couple.

Eric and Janet met in 1994 while working on the TV show Lonesome Dove, which was filmed in Canada. Eric was an actor on the show, and Janet worked as an assistant director.
Eric shared with The Guardian in 2007 that he met his wife, Janet, in 1994 while working on a TV show. She was the assistant director at the time. He was recently out of a relationship and felt wary of getting involved again. While he’d previously dated actresses, Janet stood out – she preferred jeans and drove a pick-up truck.
‘There was a little bit of mystery and danger, which was fun,’ Holden previously told People.
After falling in love, they kept their romance a secret for a while.
She was hesitant at first. She knew working with actors could be demanding – it felt like you never left work behind. But I eventually persuaded her. We started seeing each other secretly during the first season. It was actually harder on her, though, because she had to be careful not to show any favoritism to me or the other actors.
After she transitioned to a new role after the first season, they began publicly dating, even attending the 1995 wrap party as a couple.
The pair tied the knot in August 3, 1997, and welcomed Finnigan on July 1, 2002.
Just five months after getting married, McCormack was cast in his famous role on Will & Grace.
Eric has said that being married helped him handle his rising fame more effectively than if he’d been younger and on his own.

He told The Guardian he felt fortunate his success didn’t come until he was in his early thirties. He believes if fame had come sooner, he might have struggled with the lifestyle and made some public mistakes.
Looking back, I believe being married helped me handle things better during that time. I actually got married five months after starting my role as Will.
The show, which takes place in New York City, focuses on the close friendship between Will, a gay lawyer portrayed by McCormack, and Grace Adler, a straight interior designer played by Debra Messing.
The popular show aired for eight seasons, from 1998 to 2006, and followed the lives of four friends as they navigated their jobs and relationships.
The show returned in September 2017 and concluded on April 23, 2020, after airing for 11 seasons. It featured stars Debra Messing and Will McCormack, along with series regulars Sean Hayes and Megan Mullalley.
