Will Ferrell’s new comedy series, The Hawk, quickly became popular on Netflix after its release. The show, created by Ferrell alongside Harper Steele and Chris Henchy, centers around a once-successful golfer trying to overcome a slump and win again. It has ten episodes.
The new series, The Hawk, launched on July 16th and features Will Ferrell – who also created the show and is a big golf fan – as Lonnie ‘The Hawk’ Hawkins. Hawkins is a former golf champion trying to make a comeback and win a major tournament. The show also stars Molly Shannon as Lonnie’s ex-wife, Stacy, and Jimmy Tatro as his son, Lance, who’s a rising golf star. Currently, it’s the second most popular show on the streaming platform.
Comedian Fortune Feimster joins the show as Sam, the new caddy for Lonnie, while Luke Wilson plays Golden Fisk, a long-standing rival of the main character.
Although the series has been popular with audiences, critics haven’t been impressed. On Rotten Tomatoes, it only received a 28% rating based on 43 reviews, and The Hollywood Reporter called it “uninspired and easily forgotten.”
Even The Times wasn’t overly harsh, describing the show as simply silly summer entertainment. They pointed out that viewers shouldn’t look for nuance when watching Will Ferrell—especially one playing a character with platinum blonde hair and a golf visor.
What to Read Next
Several reviewers felt The Hawk didn’t quite work as a full series and might have been more successful as a shorter, 90-minute comedic movie.
People watching the show seemed to be having a great time. One viewer on IMDb described it as “hilarious from start to finish” and said it was genuinely laugh-out-loud funny.
They also suggested giving the show a chance, saying it starts slow but really improves after the first few episodes.
