Will Doctor Cox return to Scrubs, after character reveal in “one of the best half hours of TV”?

I was SO happy to see Doctor Cox back in the new Scrubs episode! It really felt like the show again. John C. McGinley is just perfect in that role. He was in the first episode of the revival, passing the Chief of Medicine job to JD, but I’m really hoping this means he’ll be around for more than just a cameo!

This week on ‘My Odds,’ Cox returned, but the storyline became more intense when tests showed he had an incurable autoimmune disease. This led to JD taking charge of his care.

Donald Faison hasn’t been heavily involved in the recent Scrubs revival because he’s been filming the show Rooster, which he co-created with Bill Lawrence. However, he recently said he’s hoping their schedules will align for a possible second season of the revived Scrubs.

He told Variety that he’s optimistic Dr. Cox will be able to appear in Season 2 much more often, assuming everyone’s schedules work out.

The actor believes Dr. Cox becoming a patient opens up exciting new story possibilities for the show’s writers. He also praised the latest episode as being among the best the show has ever done, comparing it to a classic episode from season three, ‘My Screw Up,’ which powerfully depicted the character dealing with the loss of his brother-in-law (played by Brendan Fraser).

“That’s one of the best half hours we’ve ever done on Scrubs,” he noted.

When asked about his character’s potential storyline in a future season, McGinley hinted that the hero needs to face real challenges and suffer consequences for their actions. He referenced writer Joseph Campbell, suggesting that a compelling story requires genuine risk and stakes.

The writers really excelled at introducing a lot of new main characters – around five or six of them. But Zach Braff’s character is definitely the central hero. And it’s important that the story has real stakes and consequences for the characters as it unfolds.

It’s unclear if Cox will become as significant a villain as others, but the story would benefit from giving Zach more scenes with him.
