Will Adolescence Return For Season 2 On Netflix? I Asked The Co-Creator And He Gave A ‘Passionate’ Response
Back in early 2025, when the four-part series Adolescence landed on our TV schedules, I binge-watched it right away, captivated by the gripping tale of a teenage girl’s murder and its aftermath. Ever since then, I’ve been eagerly waiting to see where the story might head if it were to be extended. The remarkable collaboration between Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham in crafting this Netflix sensation has proven to be both a cinematic marvel and a testament to compelling storytelling. However, the question remains: will it carry on?
I had a chat with Thorne, who is writing ‘Enola Holmes 3’, and I couldn’t help but ask him about the possibility of ‘Adolescence’ coming back for another season since it’s been a hot topic among fans. Despite his enjoyment in telling Jamie Miller’s story (played by Owen Cooper, a 13-year-old accused of murdering a classmate with a knife), he has a new concept brewing for what may come next.
The Miller tale appears to have reached its conclusion, and we’re exploring alternative uses for the “one-shot” format. Our goal is to adapt this method in unique ways, which seems to be more about our team rather than seeking a new story that we’re equally passionate about. We’re actively working on this idea, discussing it, but we haven’t quite found the perfect solution yet. In other words, we’re focusing on innovative applications of the “one-shot,” and we’re excited to see where that leads us.
As our discussion progressed, the productive TV author and dramatist confessed that there might be room for development with the character Jamie Miller or perhaps deepening the narrative of Katie Leonard (Emilia Holliday). Yet, despite this potential, a second season has not been planned at this moment.
From my point of view, there are numerous possibilities for exploring Jamie’s character further. However, I sense that his narrative has reached a conclusion – a conclusion that we as creators have chosen to present. Many fans express interest in understanding Katie’s perspective better. Yet, it crosses my mind that perhaps we, the storytellers, might not be the ideal ones to delve into Katie’s story.
Despite the heartbreaking ending of Season 1, it appears that creator Thorne is keen on delving into new storytelling methods, including the one-shot format and techniques he and co-creator Stephen Graham (also Jamie’s father in the series) developed with director Philip Barantini. This suggests they might be working on something different in the future.
We believe that all the characters from Adolescence have had their rest, and now we’re brainstorming fresh approaches to utilize this beloved vocabulary. It’s not just a job for us, but a passion we share in collaborating.
As of now, the specifics of that concept are still unclear since Thorne hasn’t disclosed much information about it. It seems like he has numerous projects on his hands, including the upcoming Enola Holmes 3 and his adaptation of Lord of the Flies, a screen version based on William Golding’s renowned novel.
Even if you haven’t caught up on Adolescence yet, given its popularity as one of the top shows of this year, you can easily stream all four episodes by subscribing to Netflix.
