Wil Wheaton says he finally knows Wesley Crusher in a way he never did before

As a longtime Star Trek fan and someone who grew up with The Next Generation, I have to admit that Wesley Crusher never really resonated with me. I remember the criticism he faced from fans and even Wil Wheaton himself seemed to struggle with his portrayal of the character. But after watching the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy, my perspective on Wesley has completely changed.

Caution: The following post reveals plot points from the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy, currently available on Netflix for viewing.

As a dedicated Star Trek fan and gamer, I can’t help but reflect on my past experiences with Wesley Crusher from The Next Generation. Remember how he was often met with indifference or even disdain from the Enterprise crew and fans alike? It seemed like no one could appreciate his prodigious talents back then. And poor Wil Wheaton, who brought this teen character to life, had to bear the brunt of the criticism.

During an interview with CinemaBlend, the host of The Ready Room confessed that he no longer critically analyzed his performance as the character. Instead, he enjoyed and cherished the role, much like Prodigy’s fans do.

For the first time in my career, I watched something I did with absolutely no self-consciousness. I wasn’t watching one of my performances to see what I did wrong so I don’t do that in the future. I was just loving Wesley and the way he was interacting with these kids and the production design and the visual design and all of it. I texted Jen [Muro] and I said, ’I didn’t think I could love Wesley more, and I was wrong. I know him in a way now that I never did before. I feel like I get what kids when I was a kid got. I feel like I understand. I can feel Wesley Crusher the way people who love him, feel him, and it’s different. I feel him as a fan in a way that I had only felt him as the guy that brings him to life.

Fans are expressing their desire for a larger role for Wesley in a potential third season of Prodigy or even a separate series, as they were impressed with how well his character was developed in the previous seasons. The creators of Prodigy utilized Wesley effectively beyond being just a passing character. Instead, they gave him a significant role that proved crucial to the survival of the Protostar crew amidst complex timeline manipulations. Wil Wheaton isn’t alone in expressing his deep affection for the character.
