Wil Wheaton is open to the idea of a Wesley Crusher spinoff
As a dedicated Star Trek fan who grew up watching Wil Wheaton’s portrayal of Wesley Crusher on The Next Generation, I was thrilled to see him return in both Lower Decks and Picard. However, his appearances felt like mere cameos, leaving me yearning for more of the character I had grown to love.
In an exciting development for Star Trek fans, both “Star Trek: Lower Decks” and “Star Trek: Picard” featured the return of Wesley Crusher, played by Wil Wheaton. However, due to limited screen time, viewers didn’t fully explore how his role as a Traveler had transformed the once brilliant young man. Enter “Star Trek: Prodigy,” which not only welcomed back Wesley but also granted Wheaton ample opportunity to shine onscreen. The series provided him with an engaging storyline, a clear sense of purpose, and even hinted at potential future Star Trek spinoffs. According to Wheaton’s interview with CinemaBlend, he is intrigued by this new direction for the character.
As an avid fan, I’m thrilled to note that “Prodigy” was a trailblazer by focusing on characters outside Starfleet. This opens up a fascinating new perspective in the Star Trek universe, as we’ve all wondered what stories lie beyond the boundaries of Starfleet. Just like Wheaton himself, I find myself drawn to tales set within the Star Trek universe yet untouched by Starfleet’s purview. “Prodigy” raises intriguing questions that many fans, including me, have pondered for years.
What is this universe that Starfleet is kind of like looking after? What goes on on these planets before and after the Federation shows up?
The introduction of this concept could broaden Star Trek’s horizons and introduce alien worlds as central themes. Fans might be receptive to such a change, especially if it involves Wesley embarking on new journeys while maintaining his usual cautious yet helpful demeanor. This would also continue the narrative from Prodigy, emphasizing that Wesley’s departure from Starfleet Academy was the right choice for him as a Traveler.
In simple terms, Wheaton shares our belief that the franchise holds infinite potential and is open to unexplored opportunities when granted the chance.
If they wanted to explore it. Yeah, I’m super into it.
