Wicked stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo release dialogue-free edits of Defying Gravity and Popular
As a die-hard fan who has been enchanted by the magical world of Oz since I was a kid, watching Wicked unfold on the big screen is like a dream come true! The sheer talent and dedication that Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have poured into their roles as Elphaba and Glinda respectively, is nothing short of astounding.
As the blockbuster musical Wicked, produced by Universal Pictures, maintains its successful streak at the box office, leading actresses Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have unveiled fresh takes on two popular tunes from the movie.
The soundtrack of “Wicked” received mixed reviews as it included complete songs that incorporated lines from the movie, resulting in extended tracks.
Currently, both Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have shared fresh versions of their hit songs “Popular” and “Defying Gravity”, respectively, on their individual YouTube channels.
In the edited version, Grande’s Popular has been reduced from its original length of 4 minutes and 1 second to 2 minutes and 53 seconds. Similarly, Erivo’s Defying Gravity has been shortened significantly, going from a lengthy 7 minutes and 39 seconds in the full track to just 3 minutes and 33 seconds.
At this point, it remains undetermined whether additional tracks from the soundtrack will undergo silent versions in the coming weeks.
In its initial release, “Wicked” raked in an impressive $112.5 million at the box office, effortlessly claiming the number one position during its first three weeks.
Despite losing the number one position during the Thanksgiving holiday to Disney’s Moana 2, it maintained a good performance level.
It earned a whopping $118.2 million over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday weekend, bringing its domestic box office tally to $280.9 million.
The musical has not been a blockbuster hit globally, earning approximately $97.1 million so far, yet it is set to debut in the crucial Chinese market this coming Friday.
Over the past fortnight in cinemas, it’s amassed an impressive $378 million globally, while gaining momentum on the awards scene too.
In 2024, the National Board of Review chose Wicked as their top film, potentially indicating a promising future in award-winning circles during the upcoming awards season.
Few of the top film choices by the National Board of Review have missed out on an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, with films like Gods and Monsters (1998), Quills (2000), A Most Violent Year (2014), and Da 5 Bloods (2020) being among these exceptions.
Originally penned by Gregory Maguire in 1995, “Wicked” is a story that unfolds prior to Dorothy Gale’s arrival in Oz, as depicted in the timeless movie “The Wizard of Oz.
The book has been transformed into a successful musical that’s now in its fourteenth year on Broadway, having been continuously staged since 2003.
Grandé shared on The Tonight Show last month that, upon learning about the upcoming film adaptation, her enthusiasm for the musical led her to start preparing right away.
She began subtly psyching herself and her team up, letting them know that if the event indeed transpires and they begin dealing with people related to it, she wishes to be as thoroughly ready as possible, is what she conveyed to Fallon.
She expressed a strong desire to master both acting and singing, aiming to develop her voice into a coloratura soprano for legitimate opera performances. She emphasized her commitment to this pursuit, which she feels demands proper dedication, as evidenced by the enthusiastic response from the studio audience.
Grandé expressed gratitude for not being given the role right away due solely to her musical background. She further stated, “Oh, thank goodness! It’s a part in Wicked; it needs to be deserved.
She mentioned that she had mentally prepared herself for what was coming, acknowledging that everything would unfold as it was supposed to.
