Wicked star Cynthia Erivo blasts “offensive” fan edit
As a long-time theater enthusiast and avid gamer who’s seen their fair share of adaptations, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions regarding the recent controversy surrounding the Wicked movie poster. On one hand, it’s exciting to see such an iconic musical finally making its way to the big screen. On the other, it’s disheartening to witness the disrespectful editing of Cynthia Erivo‘s image in a viral fan edit.
Actress Cynthia Erivo, who played a role in the film “Wicked”, has expressed her displeasure over a popular fan-made alteration of the “Wicked” movie poster.
A week ago, Universal Studios unveiled a poster for the initial installment of the long-running Wizard of Oz prequel musical’s movie adaptation. The poster features Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda in poses reminiscent of the stage version’s famous poster design.
The movie poster didn’t perfectly capture Elphaba’s character, as she appeared more serious instead of smirking. Fans made adjustments by lowering the brim of Elphaba’s hat to conceal her eyes and switching her green lips to red, emulating the depiction in the original poster.
Erivo showed no interest at all. On the contrary, she strongly criticized it as “offensive” when she posted the fan edit on her Instagram Stories.
She expressed that what she encountered was incredibly inappropriate and appalling, comparable to the unacceptable AI behavior we experienced, similar to someone asking, ‘is your dignity tinted green’. There’s nothing amusing or endearing about it. Instead, it belittles me, and it demeans us all.
As a passionate admirer, let me rephrase it from my perspective: “I, in contrast to the original poster, am a living, breathing human being. When I pose for the camera, I choose to look straight into your eyes, the viewer. Silently, we exchange messages through our gaze, proving that eyes can indeed speak volumes without uttering a single word.
Our poster isn’t a copy but a tribute; altering my image by modifying my face and concealing my eyes feels like obliterating my identity, which is incredibly painful.
The tracklisting for the Part One soundtrack was also recently officially confirmed, and it’s more in line with the stage show, neither adding nor removing any songs from Act One.
The first installment of “Wicked” hits theaters on November 22. The second part, scheduled for release, will follow on November 21, 2025.
