Wicked sets impressive new record with huge second weekend
As a longtime theater enthusiast and a connoisseur of musical adaptations, I must say that “Wicked” has truly cast a spell over me! It’s not every day that we witness a Broadway adaptation shatter records and outshine timeless classics like “Grease.” This enchanting movie is a testament to the power of storytelling, stellar casting, and the universal appeal of a good witch-themed musical.
Wicked has set another impressive record in its second weekend at the US box-office.
Following its record-breaking debut as the top U.S. box office opener for a Broadway adaptation, the film directed by Jon M Chu has maintained its prosperity, rapidly climbing to become the highest earning Broadway adaptation in American box office history, as reported by Variety.
Over its second weekend, the film “Wicked” earned an impressive $80 million, placing it as the second highest-grossing movie at the box office. To date, it has made a total of $262.4 million in North America and a staggering $359.2 million worldwide.
The movie “Wicked” is derived from a widely acclaimed Broadway musical with the same title, outperforming the 1978 adaptation of “Grease,” which grossed approximately $188.62 million in the U.S. box office.
Worldwide, its powerful theater debut has placed it among the top four movie adaptations of stage productions, trailing behind 2008’s “Mamma Mia” ($611 million), 2012’s “Les Misérables” ($442 million), and “Grease” ($396 million).
As a gaming enthusiast, I was eagerly anticipating the release of this game, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. Before its launch, it received an overwhelming number of positive reviews, and currently, it’s sitting pretty with an impressive 89% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. But here’s the cherry on top – the audience has given it a staggering 96%!
The movie brings together an all-star cast, led by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, and featuring Bridgerton‘s Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Game of Thrones‘ Peter Dinklage, Jeff Goldblum and The Greatest Showman‘s Keala Settle.
Over the Thanksgiving weekend, I was blown away by the smashing success of Disney’s Moana 2. It shattered the box-office record, earning a staggering $221 million over five days! To put that into perspective, it outperformed even Frozen II from 2019, which took in only $125 million during its own opening weekend. As a gamer, I can’t help but feel like Moana 2 leveled up the box-office game!
In a statement, Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman expressed that “Moana 2” has not only met but exceeded our lofty expectations over the weekend. This achievement serves as a clear demonstration of the incredible impact that the original Moana has made. We are thrilled and grateful to everyone who went to see the movie, helping it achieve a remarkable debut and set new records.
Wicked is out now in cinemas.
