Wicked: Part Two release date, cast, plot and everything you need to know
As a long-time admirer of musicals and someone who has grown up with the beloved tales of Oz, I can hardly contain my excitement for “Wicked: Part Two”. Having seen the first film and being thoroughly captivated by its enchanting performances and stunning visual effects, I eagerly await the continuation of this magical journey.
The sequel to “Wicked:” titled “Wicked: Part Two“, will be gracing cinema screens in November. Rest assured, fans, we’ll soon experience a complete on-screen interpretation of the renowned musical.
From the outset of its production, it had been decided that “Wicked” would be divided into two films, an unconventional choice for a musical adaption. The primary reason behind this split was due to the exceptional quality of the song, ‘Defying Gravity’.
Composer Stephen Schwartz noted that transitioning from the powerful song ‘Defying Gravity’ without a pause was challenging. This piece is designed to be the grand finale, so any subsequent scene felt underwhelming when presented immediately afterward.
Simultaneously, filming was done for both movies. Therefore, regardless of how well Wicked performs at the box office (and it appears to be a blockbuster), the sequel will be released as scheduled next year.
With that exciting news in mind, here’s everything you need to know about Wicked: Part Two.
Wicked 2 release date: When is Wicked Part Two released in cinemas?
The sequel to “Wicked”, titled “Wicked: Part Two“, is scheduled to hit theaters on November 21, 2025. Provided that there are no changes in the release date.
Filming for “Wicked 2” was simultaneously carried out, concluding in January 2024 after a pause in production due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes.
For the time being, let’s suppose that everything is proceeding smoothly, suggesting a possible return to Oz next November. However, it’s important to note that additional filming might be necessary in the future.
Wicked 2 cast: Who’s coming back for Wicked Part Two?
Without a doubt, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande will reprise their roles as Elphaba and Glinda respectively, since it wouldn’t be “Wicked: Part Two” without them.
Since the sequel to “Wicked”, titled “Wicked 2”, is set to narrate the musical’s second act, it’s no wonder that most of the cast from the initial film are expected to rejoin, making up a group that encompasses:
• Michelle Yeoh plays Madame Morrible
In the upcoming movie, Adam James is set to return and portray Glinda’s father once more. This newly crafted character may develop further in the potential sequel.
In the world of “Wicked,” I sadly won’t get another chance to witness Andy Nyman reprise his role as Elphaba and Nessarose’s father. Regrettably, it seems that he suffered a heartbreaking demise in the final moments of the show, which makes sense since his character is already deceased when act two begins.
A significant fresh figure will be Dorothy Gale, initially glimpsed on the yellow brick road at the opening scenes of “Wicked”. Her actor or actress hasn’t been revealed yet, but we’ve already caught a glimpse of Dorothy interacting with the Wizard in the initial trailer for “Wicked”.
It’s clear that they’ll all show up – the Tin Woodman, the Courageous Lion, and the Harvest-Boy. However, we’ve already cast the actors for the Tin Woodman and the Harvest-Boy.
We’ll keep spoilers for the musical out of here in case you didn’t know though.
Wicked 2 plot: What songs are in Wicked Part Two?
For the moment, we’ll avoid revealing any spoilers about the musical, but in essence, “Wicked: Part Two” provides a reinterpretation of the story from “The Wizard of Oz,” focusing on the viewpoints of Glinda and Elphaba.
In the continuation, we find ourselves at the conclusion of “Wicked,” where Elphaba is proclaimed as the “Wicked Witch of the West.” On the other hand, Glinda emerges as a representative for the Wizard and gains the title “Glinda the Good.
As of now, the official soundtrack for “Wicked 2” hasn’t been released yet. However, given that the initial film was a close adaptation of the musical, it is likely that similar songs will be featured, though they might undergo some changes to suit the movie format.
The songs from Wicked act two are as follows:
‘No One Sheds a Tear for the Wicked’ (Second Time) – Ensemble
Fans of music may be in for an exciting twist since composer Stephen Schwartz, who was involved with both the stage production and the film version, announced in December 2023 that there will be two fresh tunes incorporated into the movie.
He explained to The Messenger (via Broadway World) that the new songs were composed to align with the narrative, rather than simply adding songs for no particular reason.
The narrative demanded it, so they were made organically rather than being forced onto the film.
Wicked 2 trailer: Any Wicked Part Two footage yet?
Sadly, despite filming simultaneously, we haven’t released a trailer for Wicked: Part Two as of now.
In the film Wicked, there wasn’t any bonus scene after the credits, so we might have to wait until 2025 for a continuation. But after you watch the initial movie, you can revisit the trailers of Wicked to catch glimpses of scenes from Part Two that were subtly included.
Wicked: Part Two is released in cinemas on November 21, 2025.
