Wicked: For Good spoilers follow.
A particularly moving scene from the musical Wicked: For Good – where Glinda and Elphaba share a tearful goodbye at the castle – almost didn’t make it into the final version. Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda, recently revealed on the Shut Up Evan podcast that the scene was nearly cut, despite its popularity with fans and widespread sharing on social media.
She said it had been a difficult day. Apparently, someone had suggested removing a particular shot.

So, the director, Jon M. Chu, really believed in this one shot and fought to keep it in the movie, and honestly, I’m glad he did – it totally works!
I’ll never forget when Jon just knew this was the right project. He was so passionate about keeping things real and honest in the film, and I really appreciated him fighting for that. It meant a lot to me.
She described a particularly moving scene in both films, saying it was a beautiful and meaningful connection. It was a difficult scene to experience emotionally, but she was thankful it was included.

Chu himself had explained to Variety beforehand that the scene wasn’t actually part of the script.
According to him, the moment happened spontaneously during rehearsals. Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba, playfully pulled Ariana Grande aside, and the two of them pretended to reach for an imaginary doorknob, placing their hands on an imaginary door.

The director also needed to preserve the emotional scene right before the door was broken down, where the two women confessed their feelings for each other.
He shared that the show’s creators had a rule against characters in Oz saying ‘I love you’. However, he felt the scene was incredibly moving and realistic, so he decided to include the line anyway.
The new movie, Wicked: For Good, is now playing in theaters. You can watch the original Wicked movie by streaming it with a NOW or Sky movie subscription, or you can purchase it on disc or online.
The latest issue of Living Legends is now available! You can purchase Ariana & Witches at newsstands or online for only £8.99.
