Wicked: For Good Trailer Reveals Exciting Sequel and New Songs
In 2024, Jon M. Chu transformed the acclaimed stage musical into a two-part movie. During this process, he chose to divide the adaption into two parts so as to adequately portray the story. This decision enabled him to delve deeper into character development and world-building.
After the triumph of the initial installment, “Wicked”, its follow-up is due for release this November. Previously known as “Wicked: Part Two”, the musical derives its new title from a potent duet in Act 2’s final song between Glinda and Elphaba, a nod to the song itself. At last, Universal Pictures have unveiled the trailer for Wicked: For Good, which you can watch below.
2024’s “Wicked” portrayed Cynthia Erivo’s character Elphaba as she explored her magical abilities, but the sequel will find Elphaba facing opposition as she is now known as the “Wicked Witch of the West.” Concurrently, the initial film chronicled Elphaba’s friendship blossoming with her college roommate, Ariana Grande’s Glinda. After the movie’s conclusion, however, Elphaba transformed into a public adversary, while Glinda continued to associate with Madame Morrible.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share that the sequel will deepen the rift between Elphaba and the Wizard, as she stands firm in her decision not to join his side. This intriguing plot twist will be brought to life by an impressive cast, featuring Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Ethan Slater as Boq, Bowen Yang as Phanne, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Jeff Goldblum as the captivating Wizard of Oz, and Michelle Yeoh as the formidable Madame Morrible. Moreover, we’ll have the pleasure of meeting a new character, Dorothy, in this anticipated production.
Initially, we see Glinda adorned in her bridal attire, preparing to wed Fiyero, which isn’t a scene from the stage play. However, the filmmaker explained that since it’s a matter of life and death for everyone involved, having a wedding adds intensity to the love triangle plotline. Furthermore, the trailer suggests Dorothy’s upcoming appearance as she strides along the yellow brick road accompanied by her companions.
In the initial film, it was disheartening when Glinda didn’t choose as we had hoped, and it felt liberating for Elphaba to escape from society. However, in the upcoming sequel, we delve into the outcomes of those decisions, as the atmosphere becomes more intense.
I’m thrilled about these new tunes joining our film’s soundtrack,” said Chu to the media outlet. “They play a significant role in our story, enhancing its narrative flow. To collaborate once more with the legendary Stephen Schwartz is truly inspiring; witnessing him at work is nothing short of extraordinary.” The preview introduces an unrecognized tune, but Chu remained tight-lipped about whether it’s one of the fresh creations or a revamped version of a classic.
Prior to the trailer’s premiere on June 4th, the authentic social media channel of Wicked shared a sneak peek of the first clip, offering glimpses of the primary characters and a brief teaser of their rendition of “For Good.” Additionally, the official poster was unveiled before the trailer, as illustrated above.
Wicked Was a Massive Hit
The 2003 stage production, featuring music by Stephen Schwartz, has become one of the most cherished and honored shows, with those who’ve seen it also flocking to watch Wicked. Although it had been shown on Broadway, West End, and major stages globally, the adaptation provided a chance for those not familiar with the musical – inspired by Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel of the same name, itself influenced by The Wonderful Wizard of Oz – to discover it. Wicked was indeed a tremendous success.
The movie “Wicked” is highly praised, boasting an impressive 88% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, earning the Certified Badge. Additionally, it scored nearly perfect on the Popcornmeter, receiving a Verified Hot 95%. To add to its critical acclaim, it garnered 10 Academy Award nominations, with five of them being for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design.
The initial release was just as successful as a box office smash. By the end of its cinematic run, “Wicked” had ranked fifth in box office earnings for the year 2024, amassing a total gross of $755 million globally on a production budget of $145 million. Interestingly, this musical was the sole original film among the Top 10 earners that wasn’t connected to an existing franchise.
Wicked: For Good comes out in theaters on Nov. 21.
