October wasn’t a strong month for movie ticket sales, but things are looking up with the new film Witches of Oz. Traditionally, November and December have been huge months for blockbusters – films like Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and Avatar: The Way of Water have all been released during this time. Avatar: Fire and Ash is predicted to be the biggest movie of the year when it comes out in December, and Witches of Oz is already giving the box office a significant lift with a very promising opening weekend.
The movie Wicked, released in 2024, earned $164 million worldwide during its opening weekend and ultimately became the highest-grossing film ever adapted from a Broadway musical, finishing its time in theaters with $758 million. This was a significant success, earning ten times more than the 2019 film Cats. However, it appears the upcoming film, Wicked: For Good, is on track to break all of Wicked‘s box office records.
Honestly, when I first heard they were splitting Wicked into two movies, I was really worried! Musical adaptations haven’t had a great track record – even some of the most beloved Broadway shows have flopped when they hit the big screen. After the disaster that was the Cats movie, I thought Hollywood would steer clear of musicals for a long time. So, it’s a bit surprising – and exciting! – that they’re taking this chance with Wicked.
Early estimates (reported by Deadline) suggest that Wicked: For Good could earn over $200 million during its opening weekend. This would be a new record, and one that might be very difficult to beat. If these numbers are accurate, the film is projected to outperform its original and become the highest-grossing Broadway musical movie adaptation of all time, alongside the first Wicked film.
‘Wicked: For Good’ Has Received an Unpopular Rotten Tomatoes Score

Universal Pictures
There’s no doubt that Wicked: For Good is poised to be a major hit this year. Early viewers are already raving about it, giving it a 97% score on the Popcornmeter – even better than the original film! Fans of the musical, who sometimes felt the second half of the story felt a little hurried after the iconic song “Defying Gravity,” are calling it a dream come true.
While the first Wicked movie was a critical success (earning an 88% score on the Tomatometer), the second film, Wicked: For Good, has received more mixed reviews, scoring 72%. Critics have pointed to the difficulty of adapting the iconic song “Defying Gravity” as a key issue, with some calling the story convoluted and others missing the memorable music of the original. Despite the critical response, audiences seem to be enjoying the new movie, and it’s already proving to be popular.
