Wicked fans react to speculation that Ariana Grande could win an Oscar for her role as Glinda

As a seasoned film critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that I am thoroughly impressed by Ariana Grande’s performance in Wicked. Having seen countless musical adaptations throughout my career, it is rare to come across an actress who can effortlessly blend her vocal prowess with impeccable comedic timing and a captivating on-screen presence.

Supporters of the musical “Wicked” expressed their thoughts after hearing speculation that Ariana Grande might receive an Oscar for her portrayal of Glinda.

On the day following the initial release of the highly anticipated, two-part musical film adaptation, numerous fans flocked to social networking sites to share their thoughts and reactions.

Following the pop singer’s show at Wicked, there was an outpouring of comments from both old and new admirers on various social media platforms.

It appears that most people agree with the idea that she could both get nominated and win her first Oscar for her role as Glinda, based on their collective opinion.

Following news that Wicked achieved the largest single-day opening for a movie adapted from a Broadway production in U.S. box office records, it’s predicted to generate an impressive $117 million during its debut weekend only.

One avid fan of Grande lauded the film critic George Carmi for saying the actress ‘deserves the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.’

Following the film, the enthusiastic fan of Wicked expressed their fresh sentiment. “Tonight, I’m saying: ‘Wicked is almost flawless, and Ariana Grande might be its finest aspect. Goodness gracious, she’s outstanding! Is she in line for an Oscar?’

Overwhelmed by admiration, I couldn’t help but echo the acclaim for her outstanding acting. Indeed, she was a powerhouse on stage, and it’s only fair that she receives the recognition she so richly deserves with a prestigious award.

Ever since I watched Wicked, I find myself utterly bewildered by the online backlash towards Ariana Grande… It’s not just that her acting was exceptional, coming from someone predominantly known as a singer, but in my opinion, she merits genuine Oscar recognition for her performance.

This weekend marked the widespread debut of the retold story featuring Elphaba (played by Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda, with Variety anticipating that Ariana’s performance will not just be up for an Academy Award nomination, but is likely to secure the win.

According to the report from the outlet, Ariana Grande, at age 31, infuses Glinda with charisma and intelligence while maintaining the character’s bubbly exterior and inner complexity. She masterfully performs each of Glinda’s iconic songs, including a captivating version of ‘Popular.’

Instead, the outlet found that what stood out most in her performance wasn’t her singing, but rather her impeccable comedic timing and sharp wit in her one-liners.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but be blown away by her impeccable comedic delivery! The way she nails every one-liner and zinger in the film is simply breathtaking. It’s moments like these that make her performance shine brighter than the rest. And here’s hoping this remarkable talent catapults her into contention for her first Oscar nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category. Fingers crossed!

The praise continued: ‘Grande’s Glinda is both endearing and hilarious, making her a strong contender in an award race that often favors musical talents. 

Nominations for the 2025 Oscars will be announced on January 17, 2025.

Although that day is two months off and many major movies and performances are yet to be released, it’s certainly not premature for critics to identify potential winners, and Grande is among those they’re considering.

In her respective roles – Emilia Pérez, Conclave, Blitz, and A Complete Unknown – Zoe Saldana, Isabella Rossellini, Saoirse Ronan, and Monica Barbaro are all anticipated to contend in their categories.

And Grande isn’t the only Academy Award nominee or winner from Wicked that Variety is predicting. 

According to predictions from a leading Hollywood publication, the film could potentially win the prestigious Golden Statue in the categories of Production Design and Costume Design. Additionally, it may secure nominations for Best Actress (Cynthia) and Best Director (Jon M. Chu).

Initially, there was a strong possibility that Grande and Erivo would not be part of the movie, but now they are receiving tremendous acclaim from both critics and viewers.

Initially, it was Stephen Daldry who was slated to take charge of the production, and he had grand ambitions to feature Lady Gaga in the role of Elphaba and Shawn Mendes as Fiyero, as reported by Page Six.

The pair held discussions regarding the character and her portrayal (specifically Lady Gaga), and initially, she seemed to fit the role in his vision. However, unfortunately, the deal eventually collapsed according to the source from the outlet.

But Daldry’s vision never came to be — he left the project in 2020 due to scheduling conflicts.

Jon M. Chu stepped in as the new director and made a fresh interpretation of the roles, eventually recruiting Erivo for Elphaba, Grande for Glinda the Good Witch, and Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero.

Brian Viner from DailyMail commended the movie, stating that Chu and the scriptwriters had a blast creating it, and their efforts were brilliantly brought to life by the talented cast. Both Erivo and Grande delivered spot-on performances, making them simply exceptional.

He added: ‘Michelle Yeoh, Bailey and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard offer splendid support.’
