Wicked earns biggest opening day for a film based on a Broadway adaption in domestic box office history
As a theater enthusiast who has been following the Broadway scene for decades, I can confidently say that the anticipation for Wicked, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, has reached an all-time high. The staggering box office numbers predicted for this movie are nothing short of astonishing, setting new records for films based on Broadway adaptations.
The musical film “Wicked,” featuring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, is predicted to generate approximately $117 million during its first weekend at the domestic box office.
Globally, the movie may earn as much as $165 million at the pre-Thanksgiving box office.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m excited to share that the impressive box office earnings of this movie have set it apart as the record-breaker for the largest opening weekend among films adapted from Broadway productions, as reported by Deadline.
Earlier, the movie “Into the Woods,” which was released in 2014, surpassed others by making $31 million during its debut weekend, setting a new record at that time.
Should it meet anticipation, Wicked is poised to secure its spot among the top three highest openings of 2024 so far.
Per The Wrap, Wicked earned ‘$27.7 million grossed on Friday from 3,888 theaters.’
Previous accounts indicate that the musical adaptation screening on Amazon Prime on November 18 earned approximately $2.5 million in revenue from 750 theaters nationwide.
Advanced screenings on November 20 grossed another $5.7million in the US and Canada.
After hitting theaters on Thursday, the movie, being an adaptation of the Broadway Musical called “Wicked”, continued to earn another $11 million at the box office.
Large quantities of interest have arisen following a heartfelt promotional journey undertaken by Ariana (aged 31) and Cynthia (aged 37). On numerous occasions, these two actresses were seen shedding tears during various interviews.
Today, singer Ariana Grande shared with E! News that she has wept approximately 500 times. To clarify, she was speaking sincerely, so please accept our apologies for any concern caused.
Her fellow actor from the UK, Cynthia, said, ‘That’s just the way it is.’ There’s no way for us to change it.’
On a Friday, Cynthia shared the reason behind their frequent emotional breakdowns during the movie’s promotional events, when accompanied by Ariana.
During the Heart Breakfast show conversation, Amanda Holden expressed to Cynthia, “In every interview I’ve come across featuring both you and Ariana, it seems like you often find yourselves shedding tears.
Cynthia replied: ‘We do!
It seems that the interaction is intense because people bring their enthusiasm, and their emotional reactions fill the room. This is our first chance to discuss these topics, so we’re both recalling and reviewing our past experiences and the path we’ve taken together.
‘We can’t help it. We get very emotional about it.’
Amanda added: ‘Yeah, I don’t blame you.
Despite facing Covid, labor disputes, and a variety of other challenges, you managed to bring this film to life.
For some fans though, the tear-jerking moments have been a little too much.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but find it intriguing that the public appearances for the Wicked cast seem like a never-ending stream of tears from the actresses, don’t you think? (Posted on X)
‘Literally the only press videos from Wicked I’ve seen are of these two crying,’ another added.
Speaking along those lines, I too find myself questioning the unfolding events during the Wicked press tour. It seems almost constant that these ladies are shedding tears. My heart wonders if they are all right and in good spirits.
2024’s movie version of the popular Broadway musical Wicked was filmed over approximately a year, beginning with main filming in England in December 2022.
In July 2023, filming halted as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike, but it resumed following the winter holidays of that year and ultimately finished in January 2024.
Since director Jon M. Chu opted to produce the film adaptation as two distinct movies, it implies that the cast and team will need to do another round of promotional interviews, likely a year from now.
The tale “Wicked” presents the backstory of ‘a woman with green skin who eventually becomes the Wicked Witch of the West’, serving as a precursor to “The Wizard of Oz”. It examines the narrative that unfolds before Dorothy’s arrival, focusing on the once-close relationship between characters Elphaba and Glinda.
The primary evaluations of Wicked have started coming, and generally, they’ve praised the main actors’ portrayals.
In simpler terms, Peter Bradshaw from The Guardian likened the film to an intense sugar rush fantasy, with the dominant screen presence of Cynthia Erivo. It’s like being immersed in a massive, hyperreal ball pit filled with M&Ms for about 2 hours and 45 minutes.
In praise of Cynthia’s performance, he noted that her captivating portrayal of Elphaba had an irresistible gravitational force over an illustrious ensemble.
According to Brian Viner from The Daily Mail, it’s an amazing sight that really needs to be viewed on the largest screen available.
