Wicked director reveals filming moment that left everyone speechless

Wicked director Jon M Chu has revealed the filming moment that left everyone speechless on set.

The groundbreaking film has garnered tremendous acclaim since its debut, earning rave reviews from both professional critics and everyday viewers. What’s more, the stage adaptation of its music has left many equally impressed.

During a conversation with Deadline, Chu praised Cynthia Erivo’s powerful performance of ‘Defying Gravity’. This performance left the entire team in tears.

Inspired by composers Stephen Schwartz and arranger Stephen Oremus, Erivo worked on refining her vocal abilities to create Elphaba’s distinctive sound. Eventually, she delivered the renowned final note of the song with power.

In simpler terms, Erivo stated, “I attempted several approaches, but they didn’t resonate. Then, unexpectedly, it just unfolded on its own. I wasn’t intentionally improvising, it just flowed that way. And when it did, it felt authentic.

Instead of playing a pre-recorded version of the song, the actor decided to sing it live on set, stunning the entire production team.

As a captivated observer, I find myself expressing the words of Director Chu. He describes a mesmerizing scene where she gracefully floats amidst this colossal warehouse, note in hand, reverberating through the cavernous space. The wind and leaves whirl around her, adding an ethereal quality to her flight. It’s baffling how the music seems to fill her very being, as all we do is blow air at her – a testament to the magical fusion of artistry and cinematography in our production.

However, she persists in performing, holding it throughout, followed by an eerie quiet once completed. The entire crew seems to be emotional, weeping, and I find myself questioning if we successfully captured it on tape.

According to cinematographer Alice Brooks, “She’s an incredible performer, handling all those daring stunts and performing live music,” she said. “She’s like a whirlwind on our soundstage, singing live and in character while navigating this wild ride. I can’t fathom how she managed it.

The musical “Wicked” has hit theaters and can now be watched. If you’d prefer to watch it at home, you can purchase or rent it on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, Microsoft Store, and other platforms available in the UK.
