Wicked 2: Meet the 7 Main Cast Members of ‘Wicked: For Good’
Approximately more than a handful of actors have been officially confirmed to shine in the upcoming movie “Wicked 2,” or “Wicked: For Good,” which is set to premiere in cinemas this year.
In its initial release, Wicked: Part 1 not only dominated the box office but also left an indelible mark on popular culture, making it one of the most financially successful films of 2024. The movie broke records by becoming the highest-grossing film adaptation of a Broadway musical ever made, and then went on to receive 10 Oscar nominations and win in the categories for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.
Earlier decided to divide the initial play into two films, “Wicked: For Good” is now highly anticipated for release in 2025. This movie will reenact the second half of the Broadway performance, delving deeper into the paths taken by the two main witches as they navigate their journey towards goodness and evil.
Every Cast Member Confirmed for Wicked 2
NBC Universal has officially announced the initial seven actors for “Wicked: For Good,” the upcoming sequel to the 2024 film, “Wicked: Part 1.
Warning – the rest of this article contains minor spoilers for Act 2 of the Wicked Broadway show.
Cynthia Erivo – Elphaba
Unsurprisingly, it has been announced that Cynthia Erivo, an Academy Award nominee, will reprise her role for “Wicked: For Good” as Elphaba Thropp, a part she originally played both in the film’s first installment and the original stage production.
In the initial film, Erivo’s captivating rendition of “Defying Gravity” saw her enchant a broom and zoom out of the Emerald City, labeled as a fugitive. The upcoming movie, titled “Wicked 2“, is anticipated to continue the story immediately afterwards, delving deeper into her journey that ultimately transforms her into the Wicked Witch of the West, as depicted in The Wizard of Oz.
Leaked previews hint that Elphaba is planning to unmask and dethrone the Wizard due to his alleged cruelty towards citizens of Oz, both human and animal. This action sets up a climax where she is believed to be killed in the movie, creating a fresh enigma unlike her initial on-screen introduction in 1939.
Ariana Grande – Glinda
In the majority of “Wicked: Part 1,” it was none other than Grammy-winning artist Ariana Grande-Butera who convincingly portrayed Glinda’s character.
This character is renowned for transforming into the well-known Good Witch from The Wizard of Oz, who aids Dorothy on her journey to return to Kansas. At present, though, the story Wicked: Part 1 portrays Glinda as Elphaba’s roommate and eventual friend. Together, they venture to Oz in pursuit of their own questions.
In the sequel to “Wicked 2,” Glinda is manipulated by Madame Morrible and rises to prominence in Oz as Glinda the Good. However, this newfound status will lead to significant conflicts as her relationships with Elphaba, Fiyero, and the Wizard undergo major transformations during the second half of the story.
Jonathan Bailey – Fieyro
In a future performance of “Wicked 2”, it is confirmed that Jonathan Bailey will reprise his role as Fiyero. Throughout the play, Fiyero serves as both Elphaba and Glinda’s romantic interest, and he shows great worry towards the Wizard’s detrimental impact on the animal populace of Oz.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, in the musical’s second act, Fiyero undergoes an extraordinary metamorphosis into the legendary Scarecrow – a character deeply ingrained in the memories of fans from the timeless tale, “The Wizard of Oz.” This transformation is an unintended consequence of Elphaba, in a desperate attempt to shield him from agony and impending death, casting a defensive spell upon him after he was mercilessly tormented by Oz’s soldiers.
Ethan Slater – Boq
Later on in the story, I encounter Boq hailing from the magical land of Muchkinland. He initially becomes a fellow student to Elphaba and eventually takes up the role as Nessarose’s primary love interest. However, it’s later revealed that his true feelings are actually for Glinda.
In Wicked 2, it is anticipated that Boq will adhere to his role from the story, serving faithfully under Nessarose as she transforms into a ruthless ruler of Munchkinland.
In my perspective as a movie critic, Nessarose, in her pursuit to win Boq’s affection, resorts to the Grimmerie and attempts to cast a love spell on him, unbeknownst to both parties that this enchantment could have catastrophic consequences. Regrettably, the love charm instead causes Boq’s heart to diminish, eventually resulting in his transformation into the iconic character from “The Wizard of Oz” – none other than the Tin Man.
Marissa Bode – Nessarose
In the initial film adaptation, I’m referring to Marissa Bode’s portrayal of Nessarose, who is Elphaba’s biological sister and has a profound familial bond with our main character Wicked.
Towards the closing moments of the initial film, it is revealed that both Elphaba and Nessarose’s father has passed away. As we progress into the play’s subsequent act, this tragic event sets the stage for Nessarose assuming her father’s position as the ruler of Munchkinland.
Nonetheless, her swift rise to that role isn’t all smooth sailing, for she turns into a merciless ruler over her subjects. Moreover, she develops an unhealthy fixation on Boq, leading eventually to be known as the cruel sorceress referred to as The Wicked Witch of the East, who met her end beneath a falling house in “The Wizard of Oz.
Michelle Yeoh – Madame Morrible
Upon initial viewing, moviegoers may presume that the antagonists of “Wicked” are evident from the start; however, one character often overlooked is Michelle Yeoh’s Madame Morrible. As a seasoned sorceress, I found myself in the role of her apprentice Elphaba, learning the arcane arts under her tutelage. Over time, my mentor led me to the Wizard, revealing a complex web of intrigue and deception that left me questioning her true intentions.
Yet it’s uncovered that she was secretly collaborating with the Wizard in an attempt to suppress and eliminate the talking animals of Oz. This discovery prompts Elphaba, who cherishes all creatures equally, to betray her teacher.
In the climactic moments of Part 1, Morrible labels Elphaba as the Wicked Witch of the West, casting a dark shadow over her image that left me, and many others, viewing her with suspicion and dread.
In the second part of the play, she persists in her wicked actions by deceiving Glinda, eventually causing harm to Nessarose by collapsing Dorothy’s house upon her. Subsequently, it is revealed that Glinda aids in her capture.
Jeff Goldblum – The Wizard
The most recent addition to the cast list for Wicked 2 is none other than Jeff Goldblum, who will take on the role of the Wizard of Oz. Similar to the original story, this Wizard is a human figure who deceives the inhabitants of Oz by pretending to be an incredibly powerful and mighty sorcerer.
Driven by an illogical animosity towards creatures, the Sorcerer intends to construct his utopian society by stripping them of their speaking abilities. He firmly believes that these beings are responsible for the Great Drought that occurred initially, and aspires to restore Oz’s former grandeur by doing so.
In Act 2, it becomes clear that the ruler of the Emerald City harbors a perplexed admiration for Elphaba’s abilities and aspires to persuade her to govern the land adjacent to his. A shocking revelation unfolds at the end of the play: Elphaba is his daughter. This discovery leaves him devastated, having been banished by Glinda before he could learn this truth.
Wicked: Part 1 is now streaming on Peacock. Wicked: For Good will debut in theaters on November 21.
