Why Zapata’s Betrayal in Blindspot Season 4 Was Actually a Genius Move
In the fourth season of “Blindspot”, it was revealed why FBI agent Natasha “Tasha” Zapata chose to betray the Bureau, and her descent into darkness is understandable. The acclaimed action crime series from NBC initially presented Zapata as a member of the team in Season 1, working under the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Their mission was to unravel the enigma surrounding Jane Doe (portrayed by Jaimie Alexander from the Marvel Cinematic Universe), who was found unconscious and tattooed inside a duffel bag in Times Square, New York City.
Zapata is a skilled hacker who frequently assists her team in uncovering hidden operations of a clandestine terrorist group. She played a crucial role in gaining Jane’s trust, which helped the team accept her. However, Zapata harbored secrets of her own, such as her problem with gambling and mounting debt. Despite these personal issues, there was an instance in Season 3 finale that left viewers questioning whether she might be betraying the team, causing some to wonder if she’s a traitor.
Martin Gero is the creator of the TV series “Blindspot,” which is now available to stream on Netflix U.S. The main cast includes Jaimie Alexander, Ashley Johnson from “The Last of Us,” Sullivan Stapleton, Rob Brown, Audrey Esparza, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste. “Blindspot” first aired on NBC on September 21, 2015, and it spanned over five seasons.
Why Zapata Turns Bad in Blindspot, Explained
In the Season 3 finale of “Blindspot” (available on Netflix), there was a surprising revelation concerning Zapata. The beloved character was seen working with Blake Crawford, who turns out to be the daughter of the previous head of the terrorist group HCI Global. This plot development explains why Zapata assassinated MI6 Agent Claudia Murphy in the very same episode.
Following her dismissal from the CIA and resuming work at the FBI, she moved on to HCI Global. It appeared as though Zapata discovered a fresh mission upon joining this group, expressing to Blake, “This is our chance to transform the world.
In Season 4 of “Blindspot,” Blake and Zapata were formidable figures. However, it was revealed that Zapata had a secret agenda: she was aiming for Madeline Burke, who took over as leader after Hank Crawford’s death in Season 3. By cultivating a relationship with Burke, it seemed that Zapata was vying for the leadership and control of the organization for herself.
In Season 4, Episode 10, it became clear that Zepata’s act of betrayal was actually a cover for her undercover work with the CIA. She had to deceive the FBI team and seemingly turn against them to infiltrate HCI Global and bring it down from within. This was a strategic move by Zapata, as she knew it would lead to distrust and hostility from her team, but it was necessary for her to accomplish her objective.
Additionally, she collaborated with Claudia Murphy in orchestrating a ruse to make it appear as if she had passed away, aiming to persuade HCI Global of her authentic participation. It was later discovered that Murphy was secretly working to bring down HCI Global, and they formed an alliance for this purpose.
Zapata openly disclosed all details to Reade. Despite his trust in her, Reade expressed that he wouldn’t trust her again (given the circumstances of her deep cover operation affecting their friendship). Zapata confessed her deep cover connection with HCI Global to the FBI, feeling more assured than ever about her ability to bring down Madeline Burke, knowing her team was supporting her.
In the climax of Season 4, under Zapata’s guidance, we managed to dismantle the majority of HCI Global’s operations, including Project Helios. Our collective actions proved overwhelming for Burke and her team, demonstrating our unyielding determination and strength in unity.
