Why You Need to Revisit the Cult Classic Snakes on a Plane Right Now!

I’d like to discuss the movie “Snakes on a Plane,” but honestly, I’m feeling rather exhausted. Frankly, I’ve had enough of those individuals who haven’t watched this film yet.

I’d love to chat about the movie “Snakes on a Plane,” but truthfully, I’m worn out. To be frank, I’m tired of discussing it with people who haven’t even seen the movie.

Though it may be common knowledge among many that this 2006 film boasts a certain reputation, I suspect there are quite a few, including yourself young adults, who haven’t had the chance to fully experience this cinematic gem from start to finish. Allow me to share my perspective (or perhaps refresh your memory) that this movie offers an appeal far beyond its popular quotes.

Let’s set aside the cocaine bear tales, the megalodon sequels, and other absurd animal-focused films for a moment, and let’s instead focus on an exciting topic: Snakes on a Plane! (Yes, you heard that right!)

Snakes Has A B-Movie Plot, At Best, And It Was Still Somehow Mainstream

Some individuals, like Academy Award-winner Cillian Murphy, may not particularly enjoy B-movies such as “Red Eye,” a film in which Murphy also acted. However, I personally adore B-movies (and “Red Eye” happens to be a fantastic choice among them).

I have a soft spot for SOAP too, much like Grindhouse, where Tarantino’s alleged “worst” film, Death Proof, was included. I appreciate it when unconventional movies that appear headed for straight-to-video distribution manage to make it to theaters. It’s worth noting that Red Eye was the only one of those three films that earned money at the box office, which could be why we don’t see many movies like The Meg anymore.

The movie “Snakes” certainly has a feel of a B-movie, and this is evident in its straightforward plot: a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent (Samuel L. Jackson) is tasked with transporting a witness on an airplane to Los Angeles, but a would-be assassin tries to eliminate the witness by employing venomous snakes during the journey.

Isn’t it quite unexpected, isn’t it? But isn’t it great for it! Nowadays, we rarely see B-movies on the big screen, especially one like SOAP, which had a budget of $33 million – an unusual expense for most B-movies, even today. As a result, seeing such a movie in theaters was truly remarkable, and you really had to be there to appreciate it. By the way…

This Was One Of The First Films That The Internet Really Got Behind

Here’s the thing. The internet of 19 years ago is not the same internet of today.

I recall the whispers about Cloverfield, my preferred monster film, that were circulating online back then. Some even believed it was a potential Voltron movie. However, as it turned out, there wasn’t a single Voltron on that plane.

I recall as well how greatly anticipated “Snakes on a Plane” was perceived to be on the internet. In fact, it was the first film that I can remember which garnered such intense fan buzz, with the internet’s enthusiasm for it happening several years before online enthusiasts began championing “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” in 2010.

As a movie enthusiast, I was genuinely looking forward to catching “SOAP” on the big screen, but it seemed like everyone else was too. The hype around this film was massive! Unfortunately, even with such immense anticipation, New Line Cinema appeared slightly disheartened that its performance at the box office didn’t meet expectations.

In a time before memes took over, SOAP was around. Unlike movies like Morbius that had inside jokes like “It’s Morbin’ Time!”, it wasn’t clear if people were laughing at or with SOAP in 2006. But there was a genuine sense of excitement, and I truly miss those optimistic days.

This Film Was Peak Samuel L. Jackson

As a passionate film enthusiast, let me share my thoughts on “Snakes on a Plane.” Now, while this film might not rank among Samuel L. Jackson’s finest performances, it undeniably embodies the essence of his acting career more than any other production. In short, it’s a testament to the unparalleled power and charisma that is uniquely Samuel L. Jackson on the big screen.

In this film, the actor completely embodies the character adored by the public. For instance, his frequent use of a certain strong language is a notable aspect. To be frank, the entire movie seems to culminate at the point where he utters that specific phrase, and when he finally did so, there was an audible burst of excitement in the cinema.

To put it in my own words as a movie enthusiast, it wasn’t exactly the standout film of its era, but let me tell you, there was a moment that had everyone glued to their seats, and I can’t help but draw parallels to a classic Samuel L. Jackson performance.

Back then, it seemed as if Jackson was everywhere, so the idea of him appearing in a B-movie centered around snakes invading an airplane was nothing short of typical Jackson.

To be completely honest, this film wouldn’t have been half as good without him. It probably would have ended up as just another forgettable B-movie, like the imitation “Snakes on a Train.” But Jackson took it to new heights, making it something truly memorable. That’s why I still hold this film dear to me.

They Could Have Made This PG-13, But They Didn’t. They Went For The R-Rating

The film “Snakes on a Plane” might have resembled “Anaconda”, in terms of being a family-friendly, PG-13 snake movie with minimal explicit content.

However, it’s not the case that SOAP is what you’re thinking about. Instead, it involves intense (and entertaining) deaths, sexually suggestive scenes, frequent profanity, and a lot more.

Moreover, Kudos to New Line Cinema for choosing the path they did. It’s likely they could have earned significantly more revenue by opting for a PG-13 rating, but they stuck with their decision instead.

One more factor that contributes to this film’s greatness is its uncensored, some would argue excessive, use of profanity. This sets it apart by making it incredibly bold and eccentric.

Furthermore, its rating being R contributes significantly to its quality. If it were rated PG-13, I believe it might not have been as impressive as it currently is, leading us to the conclusion of my argument.

It’s Still A Lot Of Fun, Even After All These Years

Finally, don’t forget to catch up with the movie “Snakes on a Plane” once more (either if you’ve seen it before or not), as there’s a good chance you’ll continue to find it entertaining.

One aspect that’s noteworthy is its amusing nature (considering it stars Kenan Thompson, who allegedly has the ability to pilot a real plane due to his experience with flight simulator video games). It’s also surprisingly gripping for a B-movie (perhaps due to the generous budget allocated).

However, what truly matters is that the fun hasn’t waned over time, much like how its quirky concept and title initially drew crowds. Yet, it’s important to note that beneath this amusing exterior lies a genuinely well-made movie.

Instead of “Are there other silly horror movies that I’d rather watch instead?”, you could also phrase it as: “What about some other fun horror films that I might enjoy more than this one?” or simply “Any recommendations for other enjoyable horror movies aside from this one?” All three options convey the same meaning in a natural and easy-to-understand manner.

But, what do you think? Were you even around back then? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
