The mystery of why the title Wuthering Heights has always been in quotation marks has been solved. Emerald Fennell, the director of Saltburn, is adapting Emily Brontë’s classic novel, and her version will be released on February 13th.
I’m so excited about this new movie! Margot Robbie is playing Catherine Earnshaw, and she falls for Heathcliff, played by Jacob Elordi. He’s an orphan who basically grows up with her at her family’s big house, and their connection is just amazing.
Ever since the film was announced, people have been talking about it. But as details emerged, the unusual title – presented with quotation marks – left fans confused and curious about its meaning.

In a conversation with Fandango, Emerald Fennell explained that the film is multifaceted, but mainly, she felt a great responsibility to the source material because the book is deeply cherished by so many.
I’ve been talking with the Brontë Parsonage Museum and other fans, because this book really means a lot to me personally. I want everyone who feels the same way to feel connected to it, like they’re part of the experience too.

She added that, in her opinion, it’s impossible to successfully adapt such a complex and challenging book into another format.
I’m not trying to recreate Wuthering Heights exactly – that’s impossible. I’m creating my own interpretation of the story.
I’ve carried a remembered version of the story with me, one that doesn’t fully match reality. I’ve also imagined how I wanted the story to unfold, different from what actually happened. So, ‘Wuthering Heights’ feels both familiar and not quite right – it’s a story that exists in my mind as much as on the page.

Fennell went on to say that “any adaptation of a novel” should have quotation marks around it.
Ever since they announced the cast, the movie’s been getting a lot of heat from fans. A big part of the issue is Jacob Elordi playing Heathcliff – a lot of people are pointing out that in the book, Heathcliff is described as having dark skin, and Elordi is white. It’s caused a lot of discussion, and honestly, a lot of upset.
Some viewers thought the initial trailer for Wuthering Heights didn’t capture the feeling of the book.
Wuthering Heights is released in UK cinemas on 13 February.
The latest issue of Living Legends is now available, and it’s dedicated to the incredible Dolly Parton! You can purchase ‘Dolly at 80’ at newsagents or online for only £8.99.
