Wicked: For Good spoilers follow.
Frances Hannon, the makeup designer for both Wicked movies, recently revealed why Jonathan Bailey’s eye makeup looks different in the second film, Wicked: For Good, which is now playing in theaters.
The actor, who naturally has brown eyes, wore blue contact lenses to play Fiyero. He described the shade as a specific “Winkie blue” in an interview last year.

He hinted that the purpose of this choice would be revealed in the next movie, suggesting the continued presence of color would show he’s still the same person, even after becoming the Scarecrow.
During his transformation, the movie depicted Fiyero’s eyes changing to match Bailey’s natural brown colour.

Speaking to Variety, Hannon explained the reason for going from blue to brown.
I always noticed his eyes were so striking! Apparently, he wore blue contacts for his public appearances. But when he transformed back into Scarecrow, they switched them out for his natural eye color – a really rich, dark brown – to make him look more…grounded, I guess? It was a cool detail that really helped with the character.
Hannon explained more about how they designed Fiyero/Scarecrow’s costume, saying they avoided the traditional, overly stuffed look with a large rope around the neck.
Paul Tazewell’s work was fantastic. He focused on details like frayed edges and seams in the uniform. Mark Coulier, the makeup designer, created a burlap collar to make it look like the shirt buttons were bursting open.

I deliberately used blonde hair to emphasize Fiyero’s transformation. He starts with blonde hair in the first film and the beginning of the second, which then gradually shifts to a straw-like color, reflecting his connection to the fields.
Okay, so the wig was this really interesting thing – they actually made it from wheat heads and stitched them on! But honestly, there wasn’t a ton of hair to work with. And then Paul came up with this adorable little cap, made from bark, to go on top. It was such a clever detail!
Wicked: For Good is out in cinemas now.
