Why this “wildly delicious” London-set thriller with Motherland star needs to be on your radar

An upcoming London-based thriller featuring Tanya Moodie from “Motherland” is in the works, boasting an impressive ensemble cast and an intriguing plot, making it a series you won’t want to miss keeping an eye on.

The story, titled “The Girlfriend,” is adapted from Michelle Frances’ novel of the same name, first released in 2017. It revolves around a woman whose world is shaken when her son introduces a supposed new partner, who he believes is not who she claims to be.

In the upcoming Prime Video series, the lead character Laura will be portrayed by Robin Wright from “House of Cards”. Notably, she will also take on directing duties along with Andrea Harkin from Tim’e, and serve as an executive producer too.

Wright expressed her excitement earlier, stating, “I’m overjoyed to be both directing and performing in this mouthwateringly intriguing psychological thriller, brimming with unexpected plot twists and captivating character transformations.” She also shared her anticipation of collaborating with “exceptionally skilled actors” and a “remarkable ensemble of cast and crew.

In a delightful turn of events, author Frances expressed: “Having Robin Wright not only act but also direct surpasses all my imaginative boundaries. She embodies the character ‘Laura’ flawlessly, and I eagerly anticipate her portrayal of The Girlfriend on screen.

Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, commented that ‘The Girlfriend‘ is a gripping family drama which explores the deterioration of a mother-son relationship, using relatable topics such as love, covetousness, and control.

The show aligns perfectly with our Pan-English approach as spearheaded by Rola Bauer, and we’re incredibly excited to collaborate with Imaginarium and Robin Wright in bringing Michelle Frances’ captivating tale to our worldwide Amazon Prime Video audience.

As a dedicated admirer, I’d like to share that this captivating series hails from the creative minds at Andy Serkis’s Imaginarium Productions, a powerhouse behind productions such as Netflix’s “Mowgli” and “Half Bad: The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself.” This time, they’ve joined forces with Amazon MGM Studios to bring us this masterpiece.

In a natural and easy-to-understand manner, the statement could be rephrased as follows: Jonathan Cavendish from The Imaginarium described Daniel Wright and Olivia Cooke as an ideal match for the intricate and twisting nature of this suspenseful tale.

In a collaboration, Gabbie Asher from “The Tattooist of Auschwitz,” Naomi Sheldon known for her role in “Red Dwarf,” Marek Horn who worked on “Rivals,” Ava Wong Davies from “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” Isis Davis from “Killing Eve,” and Helen Kingston from “The Flood” have all joined forces to write this series.

In collaboration with Wright, Frances, Asher, and Cavendish, Will Tennant and Phil Robertson are involved in the production of Next Goal Wins. Additionally, John Zois from Greenland, and Dave Clarke from King and Conqueror will also be contributing to the production. Lastly, Caroline Norris who has worked on Motherland is another producer on this project.

What is The Girlfriend about?

In the story titled “The Girlfriend“, we follow the life of Laura, a woman who boasts a successful career, a loving spouse, and cherishes her only son, Daniel. However, this seemingly idyllic existence is shattered when Daniel introduces his new girlfriend, Cherry, into their home.

Following an awkward initial encounter, Laura becomes certain that Cherry is not being truthful about her identity. The summary also mentions that although others cannot discern it, Laura feels compelled to prevent Daniel from being misled.

She’s ready to take any step necessary to safeguard him. As events escalate from troublesome to life-threatening, the query arises: Is Cherry merely a cunning social climber, or is Laura overly suspicious and clingy? The reality, however, depends on one’s point of view…

Who is in The Girlfriend?

Alongside Wright as Laura, Cooke as Cherry and Moodie as Isabella, The Girlfriend will also star:

Waleed Zuaiter is known as Howard in “Gangs of London”

Laurie Davidson goes by Daniel in “Mary & George”

Anna Chancellor plays Lilith in “Pennyworth”
