Residents of Bondi Beach are upset about a sign posted by a film crew for a new TV show. The sign appears to prohibit anyone deemed ‘unattractive’ from being on set.
A short-form reality show called Flex is being filmed in a popular tourist destination, following the daily lives of eight attractive local residents.
Okay, so there’s been a bit of a buzz around the set of a recent shoot at Bondi Pavilion. Apparently, a notice went up asking for only ‘attractive’ people to be used as background extras, which understandably upset a lot of folks. But here’s the inside scoop: it’s not quite as straightforward as it seems. The producers were actually looking for people who fit a specific aesthetic for the scene – think specific wardrobe and overall look to match the vibe they were going for, not necessarily judging attractiveness. It was a miscommunication, and definitely not about excluding anyone based on looks!
Ben Davies, who started the production company Ronde and is making the new TV series, explained that the signs are a playful nod to the show’s central idea.
According to the show’s creator, ‘Flex’ follows fit and attractive individuals as they deal with the challenges of life, work, relationships, and body image, all set in Sydney’s affluent Eastern Suburbs.
The Eastern Suburbs have a reputation for being showy and exclusive, and the Ronde team playfully used this image during filming. They hoped it would spark discussion about the project itself.
‘We wanted the public to ask questions, speak to the producers and spread the word,’ he added.
Signs posted on the film set warned people that filming was underway for ‘Flex,’ a new reality TV series being shot in Bondi.
We’re shooting a new show about eight people who live in Bondi. Please be aware that filming is taking place, and you might appear in the footage if you’re in the area.
If you believe you’d be a good fit as an extra in the background, please let a member of our production team know.
If this doesn’t feel right for you, please don’t participate in the filming. We appreciate your understanding and thank you for working with us.
Hundreds of people raged when a photo of the sign was shared online.
‘Here we go, the new era has officially arrived,’ one person said.
This is a remarkably self-centered display, lacking in depth and fueled by the misplaced confidence of those who offer no real value.
What are your thoughts on TV shows that heavily focus on physical appearance and seem to leave out people who don’t match a certain ideal?
Comment now
One person commented, with a laughing emoji, that the project seemed like a risky idea – ‘a trap’ – and described it as a documentary about superficiality. Another responded with strong disapproval, writing, ‘Ohhhh hellllll naaaaa.’
One person commented that parents always see beauty in their children, while another criticized the portrayal of Bondi as inauthentic.
A bystander noticed a film crew was shooting near the main entrance of Bondi Pavilion, an area frequently used by the public.
They questioned what Waverley Council’s response would be, considering the filming was happening right in front of Bondi Pavilion’s main entrance.
‘If you aren’t good looking enough, use the back door please?
We hope those who visited the Waverley Council office followed instructions, regardless of their appearance or physical condition.
‘It would be awful to ruin the footage with their ugly mugs.’
More people flocked to Reddit to slam the sign, with one person saying: ‘This is proper f***ed up.’
Someone else commented, “How awful is that language?” They wondered how anyone could be so self-absorbed as to contact the show’s producers, and what they would even hope to accomplish.
‘Swish yourself in front of them?? So CRINGE.’
Someone commented that the notice was incredibly embarrassing and seemed to be looking for people who are shallow and only care about themselves. They jokingly added that anyone with a decent level of intelligence should avoid it.
‘What a stupid cringy sign,’ wrote one user.
Surprisingly, some people didn’t object to the film crew’s decision to exclude people they considered unattractive from the set.
Honestly, I saw someone comment that not every group needs to be for everyone, and I get it. If a team or group has specific requirements for who they’re looking for, that’s perfectly okay with me. It’s not about exclusion, just finding the right fit.
‘Actually admire their honesty… cue the offended unattractive people,’ commented another.
The sign is getting attention online, but the person who first posted the picture might be behind a planned promotion.
It would seem the photo was uploaded by someone who works for a marketing firm based in Sydney.
These kinds of images have also appeared on other social media sites, and many users have expressed anger and criticized the warning sign they show.
Short video ads for the new reality show are now appearing on TikTok and during commercial breaks on the show Married At First Sight.
Producers describe Flex as Australia’s first ‘micro-reality’ show, documenting the lives of eight young adults as they figure things out during their twenties and thirties in and around Bondi Beach.
This show brilliantly captures the challenges of navigating Sydney’s wealthy neighborhoods, honestly portraying how many young people feel they have to pretend to be more successful than they are.
With the shift from partying to early-morning workouts, FLEX magazine reveals the intense effort it takes to remain popular, stay in shape, and succeed in the fitness world.
‘In this world, your physique is your currency and your community is your competition.
We explore the lives of two individuals—one, a male escort looking to leave that world behind, and the other, a recently single woman eager to build a new life after a long-term, open relationship—as they both strive for success.
Life is full of challenges; for every goal you have, you’ll likely face obstacles, and every time you stumble, you have the opportunity to try again – but succeeding often comes at a cost.
I’m so excited about Flex! It’s being called Australia’s first ‘micro-reality’ show, and the coolest part is it’s designed for social media. They’re releasing super short episodes – just a minute or two each – starting on March 15th. I can’t wait to see it!
