Why The Summer I Turned Pretty’s lead star was cut from new ’90s horror sequel

Director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, known for helming “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” has revealed the reasons behind Lola Tung’s absence in the latest sequel of the ’90s horror series, “The Summer I Turned Pretty.

28 years after the initial film, the horror follow-up features Freddie Prinze Jr and Jennifer Love Hewitt returning to their characters, Ray Bronson and Julie James, who are now survivors.

In November 2024, news broke out that Tung was chosen to star in a movie, joining Nicholas Alexander Chavez, who played Lyle Menendez in ‘Monsters’, on the project.

In conversation with folks, Robinson clarified the reason behind Tung and Chavez not appearing in the movie after they had filmed a scene together.

As suggested by Robinson, Chavez and Tung’s scene was intended to be the first scene in the movie, but it ultimately clashed with the flow of the entire film.

In every film, what seems like a great idea during production often doesn’t work when editing and assembling the final product. Robinson explained, “It may appear exceptional on its own, but it just doesn’t blend well with the overall movie.

I found myself in a scenario where Lola and Nicholas, both extraordinary talents, were not involved. They truly are amazing to work with! I hope to collaborate with them again someday. Our time together was delightful, their performance was superb. However, within the grand scheme of the movie’s narrative, it simply didn’t align.

Robinson stated: “It’s unfortunate because you don’t wish to impact those actors negatively. It’s also disappointing when a scene, which you adore, doesn’t fit seamlessly into the ultimate version of the movie.

Meanwhile, Hewitt recently teased a credit scene at the end of I Know What You Did Last Summer.

She cautioned, “You might face consequences for what I’m about to say, but please do not overlook the credits.” She continued, “It could turn out to be a thrilling moment with popcorn flying, or a nail-biting scene that leaves you on edge, or simply something amusing. In any case, don’t skip it.

I Know What You Did Last Summer is out now in cinemas.
