Why the Oscars’ James Bond Tribute Left Everyone Confused and Disappointed!
Follow along for live updates on the winners, losers, and biggest moments of the 2025 Oscars here.
If you’re someone who loves movies but have been out of the loop lately, I must share some intriguing news: The Broccoli family, known for managing the James Bond film series for years, recently transferred complete creative control to Amazon, receiving a substantial payment in return. This move has led to quite a stir, especially since it prompted the Oscars to pay tribute to the Broccolis. Interestingly, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson were honored with the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award last November. However, this tribute to 007 felt a bit unusual.
Initially presented by Halle Berry, a former Bond girl, the musical medley showcased artists with no connection to the Bond series. These included Margaret Qualley, Lisa from Blackpink (also known for her role in ‘The White Lotus’), Doja Cat, and Raye. Currently, they are promoting their new single “Born Again.” Lisa belted out “Live and Let Die,” Doja Cat shone during her interpretation of “Diamonds Are Forever,” and Raye sang “Skyfall.” It seemed as though Daniel Craig (who’s been busy on the awards circuit for his role in ‘Queer’), Paul McCartney (a musical guest at the recent SNL50 celebration), and Adele (Oscar winner for “Skyfall”) declined participating in the tribute. Instead of inviting someone from the long line of Bond franchise participants to perform, the event put together an unexpected mix.
The impact seemed like a final blow to the Bond franchise, causing concern among many in Hollywood that its charm might dwindle since a technology giant has acquired it. The Broccolis have consistently resisted creating spinoffs or TV series linked to Bond, fearing to tarnish its narrative. Amazon, known for exploiting intellectual properties such as The Lord of the Rings, may do the same with the Bond franchise. Notably, the Broccolis took risks in casting, notably choosing Daniel Craig who was initially a contentious choice due to his blond hair but subsequently won over audiences in Casino Royale and Skyfall. Recently, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos posed a poll on Twitter asking fans to vote for the next Bond.
It seems there’s been ongoing disagreements between Amazon and the Bond series producers, known as the Broccolis, regarding the future of the James Bond franchise. In 2022, Amazon purchased MGM Studios for $8.5 billion, which included a vast library of classic films along with the rights to the iconic Bond series. However, since the acquisition, the search for a new Bond actor has stalled. With Daniel Craig’s character having been killed off in his last film, No Time to Die, there’s an opportunity for a fresh face to step into the role. Yet, according to reports, creative differences between the Broccolis and Amazon’s team have caused delays, as they haven’t agreed on the direction of the franchise and the potential new Bond remains undecided.
As of now, neither a writer nor director has been appointed for the upcoming Bond film. The Broccolis have historically been guarded about the spy, declining to modify his character traits or delve too deeply into franchise connections that are prevalent today. Additionally, they’ve maintained control over the final cut, which means directors like Christopher Nolan, who showed interest in directing a Bond film post-Tenet, have not been part of the process yet.
Now, Amazon finds itself in the position of finding a new creative team and an actor to fill the role. It remains uncertain where 007 will go next, but the recent Oscars tribute left us both excited and anticipatory.
