I absolutely adore The Muppet Christmas Carol – it’s one of those movies that just feels like Christmas, and I love seeing Michael Caine as Scrooge learn the true meaning of the season. But you know what’s kind of shocking? When it first came out, not everyone loved it! Critics weren’t as quick to praise it as we all are now, which is pretty surprising considering how much joy it brings to so many people.
Director Brian Henson recently shared the reason some critics reacted negatively to the beloved Christmas film when it was first released in 1992 – and it wasn’t because of how the character Bean Bunny was portrayed.
In an interview with Metro, Henson explained that the media heavily criticized the absence of certain well-known Muppets from the show’s cast.

Henson said they decided not to include a Muppet character in the movie if they couldn’t find the perfect role for them.
We realized some beloved characters like Rowlf the dog, the Swedish Chef, and even the Electric Mayhem band weren’t going to make it into the movie – the band only appears briefly playing in the background. We decided it was okay to leave them out if we couldn’t find a good role for them.

Some characters were missing for deeply personal reasons. This film was the first Muppets project created after the passing of Jim Henson, Brian’s father and the original performer of Kermit and many other beloved characters.
Henson clarified that he intentionally didn’t work with most of his father’s characters, with the exception of Kermit, because Dr. Teeth was created by his dad.
I said we could include Kermit, but I wasn’t prepared to tackle Dr. Teeth, Rowlf, or Scooter in this movie. A lot of fan-favorite characters didn’t make the cut, and I received some criticism for those choices.

Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone are producing a new Muppets film that will center around the character of Miss Piggy, it was announced last month.
Lawrence announced the project on the Las Culturistas podcast, hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, and revealed that Cole Escola is writing the screenplay.
Next year, The Muppets are coming back to television with a special episode of The Muppet Show on Disney+. It will be produced by Seth Rogen and feature Sabrina Carpenter, who will also appear in the show.
