Why the MCU Must Bring Back Eternals’ Major Character Now
Regardless of underperforming initially at the box office, Eternals is gradually picking up steam within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, hinting that one of its key characters might make a comeback soon.
2021 saw Chloé Zhao’s initial dive into the superhero genre carrying significant anticipation, being not only the first Marvel Cinematic Universe team-up film since Avengers: Endgame, but also introducing an obscure band of characters on the big screen for the very first time.
To steer clear from being likened to “Guardians of the Galaxy,” the characters in “Eternals” took on a somber approach, grapple with the reality that they arrived on Earth with the mission to eradicate it. At times, this serious tone worked, but the film ultimately became slow-paced, leading Marvel Studios executives to face a challenging choice.
Instead of immediately planning a sequel and spinoffs for the Eternals characters, the MCU decided to pause the property’s development. It wasn’t until 2025’s Captain America: Brave New World that any mention or reference to the film’s events occurred, when the world governments discovered adamantium within Tiamut’s corpse, a Celestial.
Instead of Ikaris rising from the dead and swooping down from the heavens to battle Red Hulk and Captain America, it was quite remarkable, although not exactly like that. Moreover, an intriguing whisper has started circulating, suggesting that Marvel Studios might be exploring options for reintroducing the Eternals into their universe.
A more straightforward approach might involve immediately continuing the storyline from where the movie ended dramatically, but there’s also an intriguing hint in the film that merits further exploration. It’s worth delving into this aspect as well.
Dane Whitman Could Make a Major Splash in the MCU
In the grand scheme of things, I, one of the esteemed Eternals, found myself drifting from my original purpose and setting roots in the vibrant city of London, England. There, fate led me to cross paths with Dane Whitman, a captivating historian, and our connection was undeniable.
Regrettably, the joyful moments won’t persist eternally as Seeris’s folk approach due to the approaching Emergence, an event that will bring forth a Cosmic entity from the heart of the planet. Dane remains composed throughout it all, yet he’s unable to participate in the battle because of his limitations.
In the finale of “Eternals”, it’s shown that Dane won’t always be powerless. He acquires the Ebony Blade, a potent weapon with unknown origins, giving him new hope. Before he can fully comprehend the situation, a voice calls to him and asks if he’s prepared to shoulder the burden of using the sword.
In the aftermath, it was revealed that the enigmatic voice belonged to Blade, who was then in the process of creating his standalone film, coinciding with the premiere of Eternals. It’s plausible that the delay in Blade’s project contributed to Dane’s absence from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, both characters are capable of thriving independently.
It’s long overdue for Dane to reappear as Black Knight in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), wielding the Ebony Blade, especially since Marvel Studios’ Blade is set to debut in live-action. This character made his initial appearance in an Avengers comic book and was once among Earth’s mightiest heroes.
The arrival of the Black Knight might provide just the right spark to revive and advance the darker sector of the franchise, paving the way for a new chapter of Blade and another season of Moon Knight (for updates on their Disney+ series).
In an ideal scenario, Dane might join forces with all the other Eternals in a future film where he pursues Sersei, a character placed under the watchful eye of the Celestial Arishem. Regrettably, another Eternals movie appears to be too risky for a franchise that’s currently navigating its way out of a challenging phase.
