Why The Lord of the Rings fans are confused by the kiss between Elrond and Galadriel
As a lifelong fan of Tolkien’s Middle-earth, I must say, I was taken aback by the unexpected smooch between Elrond and Galadriel in the latest episode of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Being a devout reader since my teenage years, it felt like a slap in the face to see such an iconic relationship being reimagined so dramatically.
In the recently aired episode of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” titled “Fated to Perish,” there occurs a scene where the elf named Elrond encounters the orc leader, Adar, who has taken captive Elrond’s companion Galadriel. It seems possible that Galadriel may not make it through the impending conflict between these factions, and Elrond requests permission from Adar to bid her farewell. Permission granted, Elrond performs an action that leaves fans surprised: he kisses Galadriel.
In the scene that follows, it is revealed that Elrond secretly gave Galadriel a lockpick during their kiss, implying a hidden agenda rather than a romantic intent. However, such a gesture between unrelated individuals is generally perceived as romantic. This twist left some The Lord of the Rings spectators puzzled, as Elrond later marries Celebrían, Galadriel’s daughter, and they have a child named Arwen, portrayed by Liv Tyler in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings films.
“A number of fans were surprised and confused when they saw Elrond kissing Galadriel, with some exclaiming something along the lines of ‘Oh my goodness! That’s your future mother-in-law!’ or ‘I can’t believe it! I might throw up.’
It appears that Celebrían, as depicted in Tolkien’s original works, has not been born at the time period portrayed in The Rings of Power series. In J.R.R. Tolkien’s books, Celebrían is born early in the Second Age, significantly before the events occurring in this episode (the Siege of Eregion). Furthermore, while the show mentions Galadriel having a husband named Celeborn, he has not yet appeared and there hasn’t been much discussion about him. In contrast, in Tolkien’s books, Celeborn is with Galadriel as their relationship is well-established. It seems that in this series, Celeborn may have left or vanished, potentially never to return, whereas in the books, they remain together.
The writers of “The Rings of Power” have rearranged elements to give Galadriel an air of potential romantic interest beyond what was portrayed in the original books. This could possibly be done to generate romantic tension with characters such as Elrond, which they believe will keep viewers engaged by creating a more thrilling dynamic compared to depicting a marriage that has lasted for thousands of years.
Essentially, it seems like the writers have taken creative liberties with the original work of J.R.R. Tolkien, perhaps finding it not as captivating as they desired, leading to such scenes. Personally, I’m not a fan, but I’m trying to appreciate The Rings of Power for its unique narrative. In other words, I’m learning to accept their interpretation, even if it includes romantic scenes between characters that feel unusual in the original lore.
