Okay, seriously, if you haven’t checked out Joel Edgerton’s first time directing, The Gift, you *need* to fix that tonight. I’m telling you, it’s really good!
Edgerton first worked behind the camera in 2015. Later, in 2018, he created the drama Boy Erased, also taking on the role of the enigmatic character, Gordo, in the film.
Gordo unexpectedly enters the lives of Simon (Jason Bateman) and Robyn (Rebecca Hall), a married couple. He’s someone Simon knows, and he begins inserting himself into their happy home life. However, it turns out he might not be the bad guy in this situation.
What to Read Next
As Simon slowly uncovers Gordo’s real identity and how it relates to his history, Robyn begins to understand the true nature of her husband.
If this idea piques your interest, be sure to watch the movie tonight on BBC One at midnight. It’s 108 minutes long.
I know a lot of us will probably be asleep on Thursday morning, but don’t worry! If you miss the original airing, The Gift will be up on BBC iPlayer shortly after it’s shown on TV. So you can watch it whenever you wake up!
We highly recommend checking out this “sinister little thriller,” whether you tune in when it’s originally broadcast on TV or stream it later.
I remember back in 2015, Digital Spy said The Gift was definitely “well worth your time” in their review. And it wasn’t just them – the general consensus on Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie a Certified Fresh badge too, which is always a good sign!
The movie has an impressive rating of 91% out of 197 reviews.
Reviewers have described Edgerton’s film as a surprisingly gripping psychological thriller that is both unpredictable and deeply unsettling (according to the London Evening Standard). They’ve also praised his skillful handling of the story, characters, visual style, and overall mood, calling it “damn near perfect” (The Playlist).
The tone and tension are another big sell of the film, with RogerEbert.com highlighting how The Gift brilliantly “withholds the necessary information until almost the very end”.
Hall’s performance as Robyn also deserved praise, with Time magazine branding it “terrific”.
Tonight on television, ITV1 will show the exciting thriller Olympus Has Fallen at 10.50pm. Meanwhile, Film4 is broadcasting Deadpool 2, featuring Ryan Reynolds reprising his role as Wade Wilson, at 9pm.
The Gift airs on BBC One at midnight tonight. It will be available on BBC iPlayer after broadcast.
