Why The Brutalist has a 15-minute intermission
The creators of “The Brutalist,” Brady Corbet (who is also the director) and Mona Fastvold, have explained the reason behind the film’s inclusion of a 15-minute break, making clear why it runs for an extended period.
Featuring Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones, this movie centers around the life of architect László Tóth and his spouse Erzsébet, who journey to America in pursuit of the American dream. A pivotal moment occurs when they encounter a prosperous client, portrayed by Guy Pearce, altering their lives significantly.
The three-and-a-half hour film, a potential Academy Award winner, includes a fifteen-minute break, as confirmed by its joint screenplay writers.
Corbet explained to IndieWire that the intermission was preplanned all along. It’s amusing how much attention it’s garnered, exceeding our expectations. Personally, I find it challenging to endure three and a half hours without a break, so I found it necessary. And making it public was our choice.
As a gamer, I’ve always appreciated a pause to catch my breath in the heat of battle, and that’s exactly what we aimed for when creating this film. Just like you might binge-watch an entire limited series at home, taking breaks every now and then, we designed our movie to be consumed in the same way. So, don’t worry about the intermission; it’s just a chance to regroup before diving back into the action!
Approximately halfway through the movie, there’s a 15-minute break. During this pause, a countdown clock will be displayed on screen. This intermission falls between ‘Part 1: The Mystery of Arrival’ and ‘Part 2: The Essence of Beauty’.
More recently, Corbet has explained why they incorporated AI into the movie following the disclosure by editor Dávid Jancsó that AI was utilized to enhance the lead actor’s Hungarian pronunciation.
According to Corbet, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Adrien and Felicity have developed unique performances all their own. For several months, they collaborated closely with dialect coach Tanera Marshall to refine their accents.
As a gamer, I can share that an advanced tech named Respeecher was exclusively employed to finesse specific vowels and characters in the Hungarian dialogues for precision, but it didn’t touch any of the English lines at all.
The Brutalist is out now in cinemas.
