Recent reports show that Taylor Sheridan, the creator of the hit show Yellowstone, is ending his relationship with Paramount. Despite creating some of the network’s most successful shows, like Mayor of Kingstown, Lioness, and Landman, Sheridan has agreed to a new five-year deal with NBCUniversal starting in 2029.
With the new deal, the creator of Landman can start making movies for Universal as soon as next year. However, he will continue working on his existing shows for Paramount and Paramount+ until his current contract is up.
Before Paramount and Skydance officially merged, their working relationship was already strained, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The studio passed on a feature film script from the writer-producer-director, titled Capture the Flag. This apparently upset Sheridan, especially considering his success with critically acclaimed films like Hell or High Water, Wind River, and Sicario.
According to reports, Paramount intentionally created obstacles for Warner Bros. while they were trying to make Sheridan’s action movie, F.A.S.T.
Following the company merger, the studio didn’t tell the creator of the show Lioness that they had signed Nicole Kidman – who stars in Lioness – for a new series called Discretion. This new show could potentially cause scheduling conflicts with her work on Lioness. According to reports, Paramount intended to inform the creator, Taylor Sheridan, but he learned about the situation directly from the actress.

After David Ellison expressed interest in becoming CEO, he met with Sheridan and other executives. Ellison’s leadership style favored a more collaborative approach to projects, which could mean less creative control for Sheridan over his shows. At the same time, questions were raised about the budgets of some of Sheridan’s series.
It’s really interesting to hear about all the behind-the-scenes stuff with Taylor Sheridan and Paramount. Apparently, even though things were falling apart between him and the studio, a big part of why he left and took that massive $1 billion deal with NBCUniversal might have been because they were trying a new way of working – a team approach – and it just didn’t click with him. It sounds like that change was a key factor in his decision.
Taylor Sheridan, the creator of Yellowstone, is known for having a lot of creative control over his shows. While Chris McCarthy was in charge, Sheridan had complete support for his ideas and budgets. However, The Wall Street Journal reported that after the company merger, new leadership began to scrutinize the budget for his show Lioness more closely.
Larry Ellison apparently proposed a television series centered around the 250th anniversary of the United States. This idea came up because his shows often attract viewers with conservative viewpoints or from more traditionally Republican states. However, sources say he hesitated to pursue the project, feeling it was too directly focused on politics.
Following a series of discussions, the show’s creator and team decided to seek a new network. They reportedly considered options like Warner Bros. Discovery and NBCU (owned by Comcast) before finalizing a deal earlier this month.
Even though the company spent a lot of money on new agreements hoping to improve things, reports suggest that Ellison didn’t genuinely try to retain Taylor Sheridan.
