Many consider 1883 to be Taylor Sheridan‘s best series, so it was surprising when he decided to end it after a single season, despite Paramount’s desire for more. Sheridan continues to create a growing number of films and TV shows, with Yellowstone still being his most popular work.
Though the original Yellowstone series has finished, the world of the show is growing with new spinoffs, like Marshals. The first of these was 1883, a gritty miniseries that tells the story of how the Dutton family first acquired the land that would eventually become the Yellowstone ranch.
Taylor Sheridan Always Viewed 1883 As A Limited Series
The show 1883 was a powerful and often brutal story, with excellent acting from Sam Elliott and Isabel May. The series finale was especially sad for viewers who followed the whole season, as most of the central characters died before the end.
The show 1883 received high praise for its performances, writing, and direction. Many considered it Taylor Sheridan’s best work yet, and before the last episode aired, people expected a second season. However, the finale, titled “This Is Not Your Heaven,” unexpectedly killed off the main characters, May and Elliott, ending any possibility of a continuation.
Sheridan always intended 1883 to be a short, self-contained story—almost like a ten-hour film. Because of this, the story feels fully resolved at the end. It’s also a great starting point for viewers who haven’t seen Yellowstone, as you don’t need any background information to enjoy it.
An 1883 Continuation Would Have Been Near Impossible
Sheridan shared in an interview with Deadline that Paramount executives weren’t happy with the way 1883 ended, especially since they’d already greenlit a second season. He explained that after seeing the finale, the executives requested a meeting to understand how Elliott’s character, Shea, could have survived what appeared to be a definitive death in the last episode.
It would be difficult to create a second season of 1883 because many of the main characters have died. While the show could have continued by focusing on James (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill) building their life on the land and introducing new faces, the loss of so many original characters presents a significant challenge.
While a skilled writer like Sheridan might have stretched this into a story, it feels like unnecessary padding. The finale of 1883 perfectly concludes the characters’ journey, and continuing it with those who remained would likely have added nothing substantial.
1883’s Second Season Morphed Into 1923
Paramount was unsure how the show 1883 would end, so they approved a second season before the last episode even aired. Instead of continuing 1883‘s story directly, creator Taylor Sheridan chose to focus on the next generation of the Dutton family with 1923. This new series follows their struggles to protect their land after World War I, while also depicting the closing of the Old West and the era of Prohibition.
The show also starred Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren and ran for two seasons, concluding in 2025. Next, Taylor Sheridan will continue the series with 1944, focusing on Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) and his journey taking over the ranch.
